This has nothing to do for buying out his contract, that would be the stupidest thing to do since they just signed him and richards is a hell of a player. Thats the problem with the rangers anyways, they think they can stick their fat ass everywhere when it comes to UFA's, sign them till forever and overpay just to acquire them, then hate the player, then buy them out or bury their contract or trade them away if they under perform 1 season. And these are caliber players. Rangers are a joke.

But i think this "tactic" torts is using is to shock the team for sure. To tell the team basically, to start playing better. That even the best players/veterans will get benched if they do NOT perform to standards that need to be met. It is a wake up call for the rangers, and this is a good move to show them that in a elimination game
