how many coaches in the NHL were never players in the NHL or at least the AHL?from what I can find he played in college and a few games in the ECHL and then went into coaching - SabresFaninIndiana

They say he's a good teacher well, we are going to see. He has his work cut out for him. - SABRES 89
I feel that the former players that were elite don't make good coaches. They can't understand why certain players just cant do things that came natural to them... I think that players that struggled and worked hard to get where they got make the good coached because they know what it takes. I would say ruff falls more into that second category.
That being said I don't know how to take a coach that never really tried.. |

Not a fan of the Rolston hiring but I'm not against it either, I guess I was expecting it. Players seem to respond better when they aren't getting screamed at all day long. - SABRES 89
It's nice to be able to not totally hate the coach of the Sabres for a bit. While I agree the Rolston hiring isn't stellar, the team is at point where none of us are really expecting them to be any good anyways. With such low expectations it's only fair we give Ron a shot at a full year. The firing of the remaining coaching staff is definitely something I can get behind.
Who knows, he did a decent job with a highly undertalented team last year and is apparently damn good with the kids... well we just so happen to be the youngest team in the NHL so perhaps he's on to something. |

IF anyone thinks we had a shot at Roy your sorely mistaken it was COlorado or Quebec.
In other unrelated news had a dream we traded Enroth and Sekerra for the Bolts pick.......... woke up with some morning wood after that. |

Someone in Colorado is high if you're hiring Roy.. how is an NHL player going to respect/listen to him when he's on the bench talking to himself and throwing sticks at the officials? |

I agree, What has he done coaching wise? The only arguement that people say is that he made the playoffs every year....... yeah well so did the guy before him so whoopie people just want him cause its patrick roy who to me is the second coming of torts which i do not care to have as the head of my team |

I don't see how having Roy and Sakic in off ice roles garentees Colorado anything, Gretzky couldn't do anything in pheonix and he's the greatest player to ever play. Just because you've had a hall of fame career as a player dosent mean you'll be an awsome coach. People also need to give rolston a break he did fairly well with the gong show he was handed midseason I'm more then willing I give the guy a chance he knows a lot of the younger guys coming up IMO that's a big help to guys trying to transition to the nhl from ahl or juniors |

wow actually a decent blog from GARTH... never thought i'd say that. agree that if i'm a Sabres fan, i'd prefer Roy to Rolston but i think Regier is just covering his own ass here. i'm surprised Regier still has the reigns in Buffalo... |

How is this a good article? Where does it explain how Roy is a worthy coach other than having a winning record with a team loaded with talent every single year?
Give me 5 first round talent on my team every year and id win too and iv enever played a game of hockey in my life. |

Two weeks ago, the Buffalo Sabres passed on the opportunity to hire Quebec Remparts head coach, Patrick Roy.
Can you confirm this Garth? The Sabres had a chance to hire Roy? |
