The leafs best asset is speed and skill. Their worst is defensive zone coverage, zone clearance, strength down low (especially against lucic types). The problem is they used their best asset for 50mins and built a 4-1 lead, and then turned to their worst asset to close out the last 10mins.

This is the exact point I'm making...... the Leafs (Carlyle admitted) deliberately tried to play the last 10 mins in their own zone. They rarely tried to make a play. Every time they had the puck they turned to the boards to pin it there. That isn't their game. Skating, speed, skill it. You got to play to your strengths.


No question it needs to be improved, but they could have won that game if they kept skating.

The logical thing to do is this:

If the Leafs can trade for Stastny & sign UFA Clarkson than do the following: Don't re-sgn Bozak or MacArthur, buy out Brabbo & Komi. Trade Liles for whatever u can get just to get rid of him. I'm sure one of the 29 GM's would take him, even for a 7th.

The Leaf forward lineups next year would look like this:
1st line: Stastny/Kessel/JVR
2nd line: Kadri/ClarksonL/upul
3rd line: McClement/Komorov/Kulemin
4th line: Zigomanis or a UFA 4th line center/Orr/Fraser

With the Leafs not choosing till the 20th pick, it is a tradable pick, mabie they can dangle that pick in a package for Stastny. Leafs can also use the expendable Frattin as trade bait too. Frattin isn't a checker & would be wasted on the 4th line.

I think the Leafs would greatly improved with this forward group.

I like those lines but what are we trading for statsny? Also, Frattin can play a two way role and I would like to see him on the third line, then komorov on the 4th instead of one of the enforcers. Gives the third line a bit more offense.

No, not a chance. Phaneuf is the only guy we have who can eat big minutes. He gets a lot of abuse for his boneheaded plays, but we simply don't have anyone close to be able to take his place. I think I'd do a Grabo for Statsny swap (albeit somewhat reluctantly), but that would be it

No I wouldn't do Phanuef for Stastny. Contrary to what you said, we don't have D to replace him.

Bozak is UFA. If they bring in Stastny they certainly dont bring back bozak (he'd be taking his spot).

He admitted the mistake later. they got to where they were playing one way, and then moved away from it and it bit them in the ass.

don't even need to run up the score...... Boston was looking dejected, the fans were loosing it. All they had to do was skate. they let them back into it.

Bozak sucks, we need to upgrade the #1 center position.... how bout bozak 2.0@ 6.6mil (we don't want Bozak much over 4)?? how bout a smaller version of Bozak with a terrible rep and lot older, oh yeah more expensive too.
