I wouldnt go that far unless they lost tonight. If they do then I would see people wantig them swept so he could be on the hot seat. But right now its still a series.
But that thought process isnt from left field. As a Jets fan thinking about the 2013 season I can relate.... - mrhattrick27
Oh no. One of the anti torts camp did say he'd root against if it meant his firing. It perplexed me. But true |

I'm sorry guys, I know this opinion isn't popular, but I see no other option if the Rangers lose this series. I'm not gonna get on a soapbox or root for the Rangers to lose. But this sideshow has gone on long enough. Both Torts and Sully can the path of blame right back to themselves. |

It's a utilitarian approach -- i.e., accepting something bad happening it if is going to lead to greater long term results. Maybe I could buy that sort of argument if you are talking about a 5 game losing streak in the regular season, but it's playoff hockey, and the Rangers are one of only 8 teams remaining. How could you root for them to lose?

My last word on this here and will include in the blog, whenever I can write and get the darn thing up, but reading is fundamental. Dreger never said Torts would be fired, he said, and I have bolded it. that he could be replaced if they lose, big difference:
So to answer your question, if the Rangers are to be eliminated in short order by the Boston Bruins, is there a chance John Tortorella could be replaced? Yes there is a chance, absolutely. No question about it. Glen Sather made the big trade, he moved Gaborik out, prior to that they acquired Rick Nash, they aren’t done yet building this team into a true Stanley Cup contender but is John Tortorella the right coach, that management group for sure will have that discussion at the end of the Rangers season, whenever that is |

I still think that Dreger's statement is newsworthy. If a coach is on absolute solid ground, the response would be "there is no way that John Tortorella gets fired, no matter what happens in this series ... The organization has complete confidence that he is the right person to lead the franchise going forward." Dreger is never going to say that "he will get fired" if he loses the series.
But, I do wonder whether its just offering an opinion, or whether he has any inside knowledge about what the thought process is within the Rangers braintrust. |

if Torts does get fired, the last 4 coaches who took the Rangers to the conference finals will have been gone by the next year.
Colin Campbell got team to conf. finals in 1997, he was fired next year
Mike Keenan 1994, quit
Ted Sator 1986, got fired early in the 86-87 season
lack of stability has done wonders historically for this franchise #Sarcasm |

Where do you stand on the issue, Jimmy? Has he earned next year no matter what happens from this point forward? |

It applies to players to doesn't it? How many people were crying when Gaborik got traded, despite the fact that he finished third in the league in goals the prior year? |

in my opinion, yes, I think he deserves one more season, with a regular training camp. I think he deserves at least another shot even if we are swept in this series. |

To me, it depends on the potential alternatives. If Mike Babcock suddenly becomes available, then my thought process would be different than if we were talking about a lesser known quantity. |

there were more factors to Gaborik than that though.
None more so than his cap hit of 7.5 million with the cap going down and our need to sign players this summer, as well as his injury history, which reared it's head in Columbus even quicker than i thought. |

it most clearly applies to players. I think Torts deserves next season based on the 48 game season, the significant roster turnover and I do think last season plays a role. If the organization feels he is no longer the man to lead them forward, I've always said I will understand it. I didn't like the Renney firing but understood it at that time... |

Thats a good point. It would have tpo be a clear upgrade. There is no indication that the players don't like playing for Tortorella. Is a failing PP and his lack of media tact enough to fire him? We will find out. We will find out as soon as tonight, if they go out and completely quit on the guy, you might get me to change my tune but does anyone here really think that will happen? |

Amazing how all the focus should be on Game 3 and trying to get back in this series in general and yet all the conversation is on if Torts should be fired. |

There are some factors involved in the Tortorella analysis as well. Different type of team. More talent. Less grinders. Still a terrible PP. Perhaps, the old expiration date addage coming into play a little.
My point is this. I don't think anybody in sports is owed anything. If you think it is better for the club to take a particular route, you take it no matter how unfair it may be to any individual. |

You're right Jan. I am as guilty as anyone but this is the first time a respected member of the hockey media has mentioned anything like this. Even the Ranger beat writer laughed at the notion of his dismissal. You're right, if the Rangers win tonight and go 2 for 4 on the PP and win 4-2, then we will be talking about a cup run. It all sounds eerily familar to the Tom Coughlin situtaion. |

But isn't replacing players easier then replacing coaches? I mean the whole team recieves a brand new mindset when someone new gets hired. And it usually doesn't happen overnight. A new coach could be a positive but it just as easily could set them back a few more years
