He scoffed because he thinks hes better than this team, not true. Roy, Pommer, even Connolly have all performed better than him over the past 6 years.
Whatever team pays him $8M per or more will regret it 2 seasons into the deal.
I'll tell you one thing, hes not getting $8M a season from any team is remotely close to winning the cup. - theblueandgold
Wow that's not even close to what he said. He rejected the offer, Terry asked why and Vanek said "because we stink"...not "because im (frank)ing muhammad ali I'm the greatest of all time yada yada"...you are taking this way out of context.
That's not even remotely true. Vanek's numbers over the last 6 years are better than Roy, Connolly and Pominville. Sure there was the year or two that Roy and Pominivlle outscored Vanek but look at all three of them over the last four years. The only one comparable is Pominville.
As for his contract, you can bet he gets something at least close to that. If Zajac is worth 8 years 48 mil and Gaborik is worth 7.5 mil a year what makes you think Vanek won't get a big contract, especially since he will in all likelihood be the best FA forward available...

Im not taking anything out of context.
Vanek thinks hes the best player on this team. He thinks he commands a top dollar contract. He thinks that now, just like he thought back in 2007 when he forced other teams to give him an outrageous offer sheet. For him to even turn down an offer of $8M per season because he thinks the team isnt a contender is laughable. His style of play, what he brings to the team, and him being tied into a contract of that magnitude will handicap ANY team from being a Stanley Cup contender. Maybe if Vanek was making a more reasonable $5M per season for the past 6 years, it wouldnt have driven up the contract on Pominville, and we might have had an extra few million to keep or go after other players.
The love everyone has for Thomas Vanek is adorable. 4th tier star in this league. Not a player that you build a cup contender around.
Also, its 8 years 46M for Zajac, 5.75M per year. Hes 28 years old (prime), and hes a two way center. Thats a very reasonable contract for that type of player. Gaborik was 27 years old (right in his prime) when he signed the contract his did as an FA with the Rangers. Even in the injured season prior to becoming an FA, he had 13 goals and 23 points in 17 games. Those are excellent numbers. Not to mention the 3 straight seasons of 30+ goals, and a point per game player before that. He was definitely worth that money.

I completely agree he is not a player you build around, but again you are misreading this. This has nothing to with him being the best player on the team (and for the record, he really is the best player). He didn't force anyone to give him an offer sheet, sabres management mis managed the contract situation which allowed EDM the opportunity to give him an offer sheet.
Why is it so laughable that he wants to move on to a different organization? He spent years here and hasn't won anything and wants to move on with his career why is that so bad? Does Vanek's character really suggest that he's that shallow that he thinks he's so good that he's going to turn down that much money to prove a point? The same guy who organized a double stick raise for the Boston game? He wants out and who can blame him, whether he's worth the money or not is irrelevant.
If a team is one player away from winning the cup you don't worry about things like cap hit. Hossa's contract doesn't seem to be bothering the Hawks? What about Carter and Richards?
And yes I love Vanek, he's my favourite player and yea it's real adorable

Also, if I recall correctly, Homer didn't actually quote Vanek as saying "we stink" I don't think. I believe he was paraphrasing. This team is dumping assets for youth, and not expecting to contend for a while. Vanek doesn't want to be a part of something like that, and he has every right to feel that way. It's not about whether or not he feels he's better for the team. It's about whether or not he wants to be a part of the new working environment the Sabres are bringing about. And he has every right to make that decision. It's not selfish at all.

Two way centre my ass. He's been a minus player the last three seasons and you think he's some how worth close to 6 mil when he'll be 36 years old but Vanek won't? I forget who said it but I'm starting to believe it about how so many sabres fans have this notion that every player who is a sabre sucks but their comparable or lesser player is infinitely better.
Gaborik 23 pts 17 games Vanek 41 pts 38 games...And with Cap a lot higher than it use to be you can bet he'll get something close especially since the FA market will be bare after him.

Thats all that really needed to be said in the beginning. Nothin I say about the guy is going to make sense to you. Youve done nothing but apologize and make excuses for him for a page and a half now.

The same way you claim I've done nothing but apologize and make excuses for Vanek you have gone out of your way to assume him to be this arrogant jerk who thinks he's better than everyone. You talk as if you've got an un-biased view of Vanek but you are as negative on him as I am positive and nothing I say will make any sense to you either. And if you bothered to read, I fully agreed with you about his worth in dollars and him not being a guy you build around.
And yes for a page and a half I've been trying to point out the fact that he's not turning down the contract because he thinks he's god on skates, he wants a change and he wants to leave and play on a contending team.
Not sure what you're getting at. Whichever team ends up acquiring Miller has a 95% chance of re-signing him. He wants to play for a contending team and given how few teams there are looking for a starting goalie it's fair to assume that the same teams that are trying to trade for him this year will probably be the same ones at free agency. In other words the offer he gets from the team that acquires him will in all likelihood be his best offer. - Sabresfan-365
His contract ends at the end of next year. You can't bank on him re-signing with you once you acquire him.
I hope we acquire him just not at the price you guys saying.
