What's a the beef with hartnells contract? Very fair deal for flyers. 25 to 30 g 30 or so asst 100 pim a year locked in. I'm not trading hartnell unless he brings a dman back. Stafford makes 4mil leino 4.5 id rather have hartnell.

Changing from 5 years to 6 years isn't a big change. And yes, he could turn it down. Did you remember what happened with Carle once the Flyers waited and he hit the open market? The price goes up! Waiting pretty much insures you're going to pay more. Hartnell signed at less then market value in exchange for 6 years. Waiting wouldn't have changed that.

Hartnell signed at less than market value for a 35/yr goal scorer which he is not. He has averaged 25 goals a year over his last 5. He signed at UFA market value.

For player comparison. Erik Cole a 26 goal a year player over his last 5 was on the open market in July of 2011 and on Day 1 received a 4 year 18 million dollar contract from Montreal. Cap hit of 4.5. Market value for a 25 goal a year power forward.

Some teams make bad deals. Buffalo is at the forefront. Lupul deal is a head scratcher. I'm just not buying that Hartnell did us any favors with that deal.

Hometown discounts dont exist anymore in pretty much any sport. These guys know what they put their body through plus most careers are farely short relative to blue collar workers who work til they are much older.

Yes and no, if you look at the Penguins salaries they look like they have some hometown discounts in there... The Flyers don't but other teams have some... But I agree it's a lot less than it used to be.

Look at Lupul's reup, how bout Alex Semin's, Getzlaf's and Perry's? It's hard to distinguish what the open market contracts are from the reups.

That was in 2011. Salaries don't stay the same. They escalate. What is market value in 2011, is not market value in 2013.

I'll say this for the last time. If Hartnell decided to test Free Agency this off Season, he could have gotten a higher salary. He signed a fair deal for both sides. Less money on a yearly basis. In exchange for a longer term.

I agree, will be interesting to see what kind of contract Giroux gets in the next year or so.

He's overrated anyways. Hopefully we trade him before then rather than give him huge contract.

Go figure, Stamkos scores. 1-0 Canada.

Gusty with over 10min. ice-time 3-minutes into the second period.

Doubt it. Teams bidding against one another. He could get substantially more then he got in his deal. His deal also didn't include a signing bonus.

And to get back to the original point. The Flyers wouldn't have gained much by waiting.

According to Garth, it was Giroux, not Stamkos. Means nothing, but, yeah.

Is that sarcasm? We host in 2014, and whether or not we're even a playoff team next year is still up in the air. That pick could end up being high. Even if it wasn't, remember the Flyers' track record. Our last 2 captains (that played a whole season as captain) we drafted, and we drafted over 20 overall. Giroux was a 22nd, Richards a 24th. Niederreiter is only expected to be a top 4 Dman, and put up only 1 point in 55 games for the Isles in 11-12. Seems pointless and stupid imo, especially when we could just buy out Briere and be done with it.

Nothing based on solid facts. Just my gut reaction to comments I've seen around as well as the salary he could get outside of that team. He hits UFA and he'll get a nice payday.

If I were them, I'd keep Letang and move Malkin (depending on if Crosby can stay healthy or not). The return they could get for Malkin would be incredible.
