Here's the summary of the game:

The Americans lead, 4-1. Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov had one of those games where he wasn't giving up "soft" goals per se, but looked bad on a couple of momentum save chances were a save was possible if he played it a little better.

Unfortunately, this sounds familiar.

That said, however, Team USA trotted out a somewhat pedestrian line up compared to the Russians.

I think de Haan can be that good, no idea if he will be. I didn't know if you could trade for a player who is bought out or not. The question I was asking (if it was possible) was whether you'd want to cut down on the ca by $3M and get a prospect, or cut down by $6.5M and add a player. Since it's not possible, it's moot.

Flyers can't afford any dead Cap space.

Without having seen the game, I'm not willing to judge Bryz on this one.

Anyone able to watch it that can summarize Bryz's work?

he only ducked a few times so there is hope

oh so, varly also gave up 4 goals. hmmm...for some reason i imagine all the focus will still be on how stalin made bryz a horrible goalie and nobody will say a (frank)ing word about the other guy. i'm going to lose my mind.
- hammarby31

First thing no one said bryz is a bad goalie because of his views on stalin, he doesn't play up to his contract. The same reason briere is likely gone. Secondly varlamov doesn't play for the flyers if you want to talk about his performance check the avs thread.

The Rangers are the only remaining playoff team that has a starting goaltender with a cap hit over $3.8 million.

Briere is likely gone due to the Cap going down. If the Flyers had Cap room, he'd likely finish out the contract here in Philly. The results are not where they need them to be with the goaltending situation. We can debate the reasons why.

I think we can all agree that Stalin had better moustache than Hitler. That should answer any question about Bryz' goaltending performance.

Is there any way the Flyers send this lineup out there next year and have 12 mil in cap space? Cap space comes from Briere and Bryz buyout and Pronger on LTIR. I don't think they will.

Scott Hartnell/ Claude Giroux/ Jakub Voracek
Matt Read/ Brayden Schenn/ Wayne Simmonds
Scott Laughton/ Sean Couturier/ Zac Rinaldo
Jay Rosehill/ Maxime Talbot/ Jason Akeson

DEFENSEMEN
Kimmo Timonen/ Luke Schenn
Braydon Coburn/ Andrej Meszaros
Nicklas Grossmann/ Erik Gustafsson
Bruno Gervais/ Oliver Lauridsen

Technically yes...although MAF has started more games than Vokoun. Also, Quick is signed to an extension with a capt hit of $5.8M. Same for Howard ($5.29M)

Not to mention that Rask will need a new deal. If Crawford continues his level of play, he'll be looking at a new deal in the next few years.

Yes and no. It is certainly possible that they buyout both Bryzgalov and Briere. But what I don't think is feasible, is that they sit on that money. They'll use it.

In reference to age and contract status?

Sure, but we'll see if fortunes change for these teams when they allocate a much higher % of their cap money on goaltending.

Gentlemen, please. The point is that you can get to the second round of the playoffs with a goalie cap hit of a buck three eighty.

The way to make that work is to have the team in front of the goalie play really well.

Wait...what?

They have good goalies. They'll be signed to market deals. What will change is that they'll have less money to spend elsewhere. But goaltender is the most important position on the ice. Makes sense to spend the money there. And look elsewhere if neccessary to make the sacrifices.

Who controls the money with the Flyers? Is it the suits at Comcast? If so, I can't see them writing off on a financial loss like that.

Goaltending is also the most volatile position in terms of level of play from year-to-year, and there isn't that much difference in terms of talent from the 5th best goaltender to the 15th best goaltender.

There's a lot of room for value at this position. It doesn't make a lot of sense to spend big there unless you have a guy like Lundqvist.

Build a team that plays well in front of him, and you can make almost any NHL-caliber goalie look good.

Comcast owns the Flyers. I can definitely see them being okay with Briere. Bryzgalov is certainly a lot of money to write off. And I could see that being an issue.

Could any of that money go towards resigning giroux, schenn, and coots?
