Yawn, it's been discussed umpteen times, league would flip the (frank) out and he doesn't fit here anymore anyway.
- JoeRussomanno

Yep. The league would find a way to use "circumvent" in it's reason to disallow those moves.

Here's an idea to get around getting briere back this season......trade him to another team trying to dump a bad contract....one bad contract for another.....we both buy out the newly acquired player and then we can resign briere and the other team can resign their player if they so desire.....
- huks99

It's not just Briere's cap hit that's an issue, he really doesn't fit well on the current roster or in the line-up. He pushes Schenn to wing and Couturier to third or fourth line. He's a defensive liability & he's not effective unless he's playing the middle

I'd prefer Schenn on the wing, I thought he was more natural there.

I'd wait to see who's bought out also. The current crop of UFA's doesn't excite me much.
- 77rams

I would think in Lu's case it probably will happen quickly. I read an article where Gillis wrote to season ticket holders and basically said things needed to be done differently to be successful. Considering their cap situation and Lu's current contract, I only see buy-out as the only viable option.

Did they discuss allowing the restructuring of contracts as part of the new CBA? I didn't read anything about that.

I don't think either side wants that. Owners would probably be afraid of players holding out for more money, and players probably don't want teams demanding them taking a paycut or face being released. Also, owners would almost certainly demand an end to fully guaranteed contracts

So I just went way back in time, into the Metzler archives, and read his blog "Reaction to Richards and Carter Trades", to try to learn from the past. I read snippits of blogs leading up to that one, as well. What I learned is that back then, Carter and Richards trades were nothing expected, they were totally out of the blue. Metz seemed to be strongly suggesting that the Flyers should trade Kris Versteeg plus their 8th overall to Florida for the 3rd overall, so they could draft either Gabriel Landeskog, or Adam Larsson. If they stayed, he predicted they would be looking strongly at Dougie Hamilton (Though he doubted Hamilton would drop that far), Nathan Beaulieu, and then as a third option, Sean Couturier. What does this show? That whatever big move happens this offseason (if it does happen), will probably be unpredictable. Whoever they pick, it will likely be the last person that we think of. Do I hope they take Ryan Pulock? Yes dearly. Who might they be more likely to take? I don't know. But the chances it is who we hope it will be are pretty small, as much as we want it to happen. It will probably be someone we didn't expect. And from the past, even though it was one year, I would learn from this blog that the Flyers are almost definitely not trading up, if you include their statements this year that they would be happy picking where they are. Metz also suggested that they trade down that year, as well. I would say the chances are pretty low that they trade down, either. It's funny how enlightening looking at the past can be.

Just as an option once the player is targeted for a buy out. Give the player and the team (if both agree) a choice to restructure the contract rather than just sending the player packing.
