I disagree!!! You have Cooke or Morrow run Karlsson his next shift. I mean a charge and as you're skating to the penalty box you point at Neil. That's the only way he gets it. - lloyd095
Kind of funny, someone else used this excuse for Karlsson when Neal burned him on the boards and Karl flopped to the ground like a dying fish.
Popular excuse today, nice! - nbartley9
So what's Malkin's reason for falling over when the ref nudged him? Trying to draw a penalty on the ref?
Also, the game was a little bit chippy, but not anything close to the Bos/Tor or LA/StL series. It was actually pretty calm and boring minus a few small sporadic spots.
As for targeting players, you're damn right they're being targeted. It's the playoffs. If a guy's got a bum shoulder, you run him on that side all night. If he's wearing a football helmet to protect a jaw, you take a shot at it every chance you get. If a guy's got a bad ankle, you make him push on that side all night. Every player on every team does it to a degree, and would be doing their team a disservice not to.

Geno dives sometimes.
But he did have a stick behind his right knee on that one.

I actually thought it was smart for you guys not to
Neil wont be intimidated by anyone. Trying to "set the tone" against Neil is basically saying "Give me more"
By not setting the tone, it kinda says, you know what, we understand you are who you are and it wont faze us, we will just win anyways
Not that it matters, cause Ottawa is the "tougher team" so probably smart for Pittsburgh to keep this series between the whistles, and not outside of them like last year with Philly - Alcatraz
Derek Engelland, Douglas Murray, and Brenden Morrow would beg to differ. Plus, the "tougher team" got out hit last night 40-26.
Like I said you don't target Neil you target Karlsson... He can be beat at his own game. Then he loses his mind. He doesn't care if you hit him. - lloyd095
Yes, because taking a 5-minute major, complete with a possible suspension and invoking retribution now or in the future is the way to go.
You're on the right path, but you're off a bit. Love him or hate him, Craig Berube tells this story:
He was playing a game against a team (the Rangers) where a player (Langdon, I think) was getting out of control and running some guys. Berube went out, skated up to one of their better players (Leetch) and just said, "If you don't tell him to quit it, he won't pay; I'm taking you out of this game." The player stopped it right then and there, and actually apologized to Berube.
That last part (the apology) won't happen because mutual respect is gone in hockey. Still, you can use a warning that's just as effective without costing your team.

That Karlsson dive was pitiful. Just plain pitiful. The guy is a world class skate, one of the best in history and he flopped like that. I won't hold it against him though, all players dive. But the fact that the refs got suckered into that was terrible.

Who said anything about a major? I'm talking about a charge!!! You know one of those hits OVI gets away with 10 times a game. I can handle a 2 minute penalty in a 4-1 game to send a message.
I call BS on that story. If that was the case Lemeuix would've been dead and buried with Ulf as a teammate.

If you think Ottawa is the tougher team you are in for a wake up call. Outside of Neil and Cowen the Sen's are going to be bludgeoned this series. Don't believe me, ask that kid that left Eller bleeding and stumbling about how an open ice hit from Orpik feels.
Prior to the deadline I would admit that your statement had some merit. But following the acquisitions of Morrow, Iginla and Murray team toughness is no longer a problem.

Were you not one of the ones complaining about Neal's 3rd penalty last night when he did exactly that?
Everyone was female doging about how dumb he was, i was cheering because he put Karlsson on his ass with a 3 goal lead. I'd much rather have him take that penalty than some retalitory slash or something.
I saw something online this morning that basically the ref told everyone that it was done, and Neal gave one last shot. Not sure if the CBC had a better replay, but on NBCSN you couldn't see anything.

I complained about Neal taking 3 penalties in a game we had the lead. You're not making a point if you spend 6 minutes of a period in the box. Yes I want one very clear penalty taken to make a point. Not an endless PP chance.

YA the play was basically done and Neal who wasn't apart of it yet decided at the end to come in and give an old fashion face wash to conacher

They need to hit Gonch every time he touches the puck too. We all know that as steady as he is he's apt to make some turnovers when pressured.
Does anyone have video of Neal hitting Sid? I completely missed that from the stands last night. If He's going to go tat route, we should absolutely be whacking Karlsson on the knee at every opportunity.

I guarantee you, with the way the NHL gives star players special treatment, if you send a message by taking a charge at a star player late in a game, you will get suspended.
And why would you not believe that story? Lemieux took more abuse on a day in/day out shift than any other player in league history. he was so big and strong that it was almost impossible to hurt him until his back ailments. Also, love him or hate him, Berube's not much for lying.

I'm joking but because ULF was so dirty that Mario would hear that every game.

I'm sure he did. And like I say, he dealt with that crap every game.
Also, back then, before this "play nice or else" BS the NHL is instituting, it took A LOT to cross the line. Ten years ago, fans would have been horrified that any of the penalties last night were called in a playoff game, and would wonder why they weren't hitting at all.
