Really?

- Iggysbff

Yup, they most definitely are in "cap hell" heading into the off-season. You gotta think that Gillis and Gilman have been well aware of this for months now though.

Nope. The compliance buyouts were originally scheduled to be used only in the summers of 2013 & 2014, but the Rangers and Habs basically told Wade Redden and Scott Gomez to sit home and avoid injuries, so the NHL & NHLPA agreed to "accelerated" Compliance buyouts that could be done immediately.

The conditions of the accelerated CBO's was that the player got 100% of their salary due for 2013, the team carried the full cap hit for 2013 and the rest of the contract was handled like a regular compliance buy out.

So, each tam got 2 compliance buy outs, to use or lose by the end of the summer 2014 buyout period. The Habs and Rangers have one left each, and teams utilizing them will have to pay any player they use them on 2/3rds of the remaining cash owed, over twice the remaining term, and the contract comes completely off the cap. It protects teams from cap recapture penalties, as well.

Players who are injured can not be bought out under the terms of a CBO, so guys like Chris Pronger and Marc Savard are not eligible.

Can Pitt even afford that? I think they'd go 6.5 as the absoulte max because of their situation.
- Nucker101

Letang might leave money on the table and take 6m per.

Some juggling will need to be done but to be fair, with 2 compliance buyouts and an entire summer at their disposal that might bring them some steps away from the ledge. If the situation remains the same in August I'll get on board with the panic talk.

That's right. They need to dump Booth, Ballard and Lu through trades and buyouts. I really doubt anyone would trade for Booth. I'd make him candidate #1.

Yeah, I think somewhere in that 6-6.5 range is realistic for both sides on a long-term contract. A NTC would probably get him to stay for closer to 6 or 6.25.

Agreed. Although knowing this fanbase, the panicking will begin before July 1st.

Letang is going to get Phanuef money. 6.5-7 per.
- Gullzy

After watching phaneuf and edler both play this year I have an honest question :
Dion >edler
Dion Dion=edler

Letang should get paid but he might take less to play in his situation

They'll use the 'cap hell' to their advantage tho. They'll be forced to play younger players who learn on the job and then they'll say they've reset the organization by going younger.

Not trolling here, but tell me which teams out there WITH CAP SPACE do you think would be willing to take these guys and what do you think they have that they would be willing to give back?

Personally I don't see anyone taking any of these guys without giving a bad contract back.

But Booth also has more upside to us and could possibly turn into a decent 2nd liner under a different coach. It's a gamble no doubt.

Regarding what could be done, you'd have to think Ballard (4.2m) is bought out, and Luongo traded for a draft pick(s) (5.3m). That gives us 9.5m to sign about 6 players. I'm gonna guess on the re-signings:

- Lappy re-signs at the same salary $1m
- Tanev re-ups from his current 900k to 2m
- Raymond walks, Jensen in at 863k
- Alberts re-us at the same salary 1.2m
- Sestito re-ups for the league minimum 500k
- Schroeder re-ups for 1.5m
- Pinnizotto re-ups at the same salary 600k

Higgins-Kesler-Booth
Jensen-Schroeder-Hansen
Sestito-Lappy-Pinni

Bieksa
Hamhuis
Edler
Garrison
Tanev
Corrado
Alberts

Schneider
Vet at 1.5m

Leaves us with roughly 500k in cap to spare. Buyout/trade Booth, bring up Gaunce and you've got even more to sign a UFA or bring in salary, Trade Edler for less cap coming back and that frees up more again.

None of this is fantastic but it's certainly possible to be cap compliant.

If he's our GM, yes I would because we can't afford to sit still. If a GM is not supposed to even attempt to make the team better he should simply be fired and replaced with someone who is.

I am sure ownership is thinking the same options.

You missed the buyout comment, which might apply to Ballard and Booth. Luongo will have to be either traded for a draft pick(s) or kept (and Schneider traded).

The more I think about it the more I like it. The Canucks need someone who score and if Dany Heatley is nothing else, he WAS a goal scorer.

A market hasn't been established yet. Once we see some player transactions we will see a market develop for certain types of players.

Depending on supply and demand, you might see some interest in Booth, Ballard, or Luongo.

Why would Heatley get 2-3 million? He strikes me as the kind of guy that would rather get 5 million playing in the KHL than 2.5 million here.
- Morris

Heatley would be a wasted roster spot ... This kinda move wreaks of sutter ... Past his prime player who will most likely not perform taking a roster spot from one of your kids

Kassian?

Even under a new coach, I don't think anybody would be happy with that line up.

We need a bigger third line center, and a more capable 4th line.
I really hope that MG can pick up some reasonably priced UFA bottom 9 forwards to replace Weise and Pinni, and hopefully trade Edler for some young gun with tonnes of potential.

I think that might be enough change to rattle the core. If that doesn't work through next season, ask the Sedins if they want to be traded to a contender who can afford them, and start the rebuild.

That assumes we have kids worth promoting. Beyond Jensen and Gaunce I can't think of any that are knocking on the door.

Another player I'd consider moving is Kevin Bieksa. He's a penalty machine.

I don't care if he gives quality interviews and the media likes him. He seems to be more of a liability than an asset.

Casual Kev should be on the block.

Forgot about Kassian but he's already under contract. My point wasn't to imagine the ideal roster but how we might get cap compliant with the roster we have. Just trying to point out that we can clearly get our cap house in order before even angling for trades.

Fair enough, that's your opinion. I think Lu is good enough at 5.3m per to net a 7th rounder. That's my opinion.
