I'm not sure what ELC could possibly help us now like Bobby Ryan could but agreed that it would be better for our cap.

The way I see it, if we don't use our key trade chips for players that can help us now, we may as well trade the core immediately and start the rebuild.

Completely agree, keep Kassian, Jensen, Tanev and Cory, everyone else can go. If you do it in the right draft year (like 2003) and get 3-4 1sts and 3-4 2nds.
Could be an instant rebuild, but would still take a few years for them to settle in.

Really?

If NYI could trade Reinhart/Nino for Edler/Schneider, they should take that AND RUN!!!

I'm glad you agree that Iggy is an idiot.

Yeah and edlers is long term ... 5 mill is good value the old edler ... But if he can't find his game then that can turn into an ugly contract
- Redmile247

And therein lies the risk, which can be said for nearly any contract in the NHL let's be honest. Edler right now is good enough to line up beside Beauchemin as their top pairing.

To be clear I'm not advocating a blow up. At this point we should be looking to trading 1 or 2 of the core to address our scoring woes IMO.

That said, for argument's sake, if we're blowing it up... there's never any guarantees loading up on draft picks (see EDM). Best to do it by draft picks and young players (on ELCs) already in the NHL. Also best to mix in some vets with the youngsters, which is why I'd keep Bieksa-Hamhuis as a pairing, as well as someone like a Burrows and possibly the Sedins (eventually on the 2nd line) for the forwards. In saying that the Sedins would net us the biggest return, so maybe keep Kesler and trade the Sedins. Trading everyone would set us back a few more years but it could end up being for the best. Who knows. I'm glad I don't have Gillis' job.

Ducks have a lot of money tied up in d men for the next few years ... I think losing a scoring forward for another d man might not be what they need
Now if you make them package deals with a couple pieces each way then maybe it could work

Not sure what you mean. They've got just $20m in 7 D next season. Canucks by contrast have $23.5m, Chicago this season had $25m, Boston about $20m, NYR about $20m, TO $17m. ANA seems to be in line with the norm. That said, if they got Edler, they could no doubt look to trade someone like a Sbisa or Allen.

I'm sure they would like edler ... But with all that d they don't need edler ... If you want something close to a bobby Ryan for edler you need to find a team that is in more need of him

Have you watched the Ducks? They're short on high end D, I'll leave it at that.

Anaheim has very little problem scoring ... Being a Canucks fan I'm sure you've seen the slide in edlers defensive game ... If they needed his offense I could see your point

thanks for the most obvious statement in HB history. How's it going supporting the Kings from the cozy confines of Calgary?

It's going as good as it was my entire life in BC before moving here. Thanks for asking! How's it going cheering for the Canucks from...well anywhere?

FORWARDS
Daniel Sedin(6.1m) - Henrik Sedin(6.1m) - Zack Kassian(870k)
Alexandre Burrows(4.5m) - Ryan Kesler(5m) - Nathan Horton(5.25m)
Clarke MacArthur(2.25m) - Jordan Schroeder(1.3m) - Jannik Hansen(1.35m)
Chris Higgins(2.5m) - Maxim Lapierre(1.25m) - Chad Larose(1.8m)
Adam Hall(750k)

DEFENSEMEN
Dan Hamhuis(4.5m) - Kevin Bieksa(4.6m)
Jason Garrison(4.6m) - Chris Tanev(1.5m)
Jordan Leopold(3m) - Frank Corrado(599k)
Alexander Sulzer(1m)

GOALTENDERS
Cory Schneider(4m)
Eddie Lack(750k)

Transactions
Buyout: David Booth ($0.000m)
Buyout: Keith Ballard ($0.000m)
Trade Roberto Luongo to New York Islanders a conditional draft pick
Trade Alex Edler and a pick/prospect to the Carolina Hurricanes for the 5th pick
or
Trade Alex Edler to the New Jersey Devils for the 9th pick.

Picks in this year's draft: 1st, 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th

SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,524,444
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $775,556

I was a little generous with the contracts since I assume that UFA's will be overpaid as usual, but realistically the cap space would be closer to 1.5 million since I went a few hundred extra thousand higher on the signings. Either way that gives the new coaching staff 4 lines to roll and 3 pairing to roll plus potential to move different players up and down the lineup if need be. I chose to sign players with good puck possession stats, but you could always replace a guy like MacArthur with Torres. But that line-up would be able to provide some good scoring top to bottom and I'd trust all 4 lines in the playoffs. I would have loved to have been able to sign a guy like Boyd Gordon over Lappy, but I think he'll get 2 million+ thrown at him. Leopold can play top 4 minutes in case of injury which is why I signed him over a typical 3rd pairing d-man, plus he somewhat eases the loss of Edler, again I'd love to sign a guy like Mark Streit but I think he'll get some nice offers.

I think Tanev's salary may be almost double what you've got posted here. I think he'll be a target of an RFA offer sheet. Hopefully MG can pull a rabbit out of the hat and get him signed for the numbers you've got listed.

If Clarke Macarthur can be signed for so little, I suspect he stays in Toronto. His last two full seasons were 20 goal seasons. The only reason I can see him leaving Toronto, and signing for so little, would be that he feels he's been pushed too far down the Leafs depth chart on wing. Between Kessel, Lupul, JVR, Frattin, and Kulemin, he may not get the chance to play much more than third line, depending on how Frattin progresses next season. But a decent, hard working 28 year old guy like him that can pot 20 probably signs for more than $3M, if he goes to the highest bidder. This is, after all, UFA signings we're talking.

Torres might be more realistic for $2M.

Current or old Edler, as long as he's .5 points/game and racking up hits and blocked shots, he's worth 5 million.

I'd guess 2ish, but I have a difficult time seeing any higher than $2.5 million.

That may be his 'actual' worth but I think other teams will be targetting the Canucks because of their cap situation. And because Tanev appears to have a long future ahead of him.

According to the Province, the compensation for an offer up to $3,364,391 is only a second rounder.

MG needs to sign this kid asap.

Our cap situation for D is pretty lousy already and with Tanev needing to be re-upped it makes it that much worse. If he's going to cost more than $2m it puts us in a serious bind.
