Yeah, that's definitely it.

I just find the "underrated" label a bit funny once that player has been called it so often that everybody knows how good he is.

But I know what you meant. He's still not as hyped as he'd be in a big market.

- Fosco

Agreed and same with the "overrated" list with guys like Luongo, Kessel, Phaneuf constantly mentioned, IMO they get so much hate from everyone that they basically become underrated at a certain point.

Interesting reads. Detroit loved Edler and now that they're in the East, I could see a deal happening. Send Eddie to Detroit for Ferraro and Backman. Who's Backman you say? Here's who:

I'd hate to see Eriksson go to my least favourite team, but if it would further his career, then I can't complain. He's been one of my favourite players since he got drafted!
- MaximumBone

I have serious troubles believing we could net Loui Ericksson for Edler straight up. Edler is not a top pairing guy but Ericksson is definitely a top liner.

Daniel Sedin(6.1m) - Henrik Sedin(6.1m) - Zack Kassian(870k)
Alexandre Burrows(4.5m) - Ryan Kesler(5m) - Nathan Horton(5.25m)
Clarke MacArthur(2.25m) - Jordan Schroeder(1.3m) - Jannik Hansen(1.35m)
Chris Higgins(2.5m) - Maxim Lapierre(1.25m) - Chad Larose(1.8m)
Adam Hall(750k)

DEFENSEMEN
Dan Hamhuis(4.5m) - Kevin Bieksa(4.6m)
Jason Garrison(4.6m) - Chris Tanev(1.5m)
Jordan Leopold(3m) - Frank Corrado(599k)
Alexander Sulzer(1m)

GOALTENDERS
Cory Schneider(4m)
Eddie Lack(750k)

Transactions
Buyout: David Booth ($0.000m)
Buyout: Keith Ballard ($0.000m)
Trade Roberto Luongo to New York Islanders a conditional draft pick
Trade Alex Edler and a pick/prospect to the Carolina Hurricanes for the 5th pick
or
Trade Alex Edler to the New Jersey Devils for the 9th pick.

Picks in this year's draft: 1st, 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th

SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,524,444
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $775,556

I was a little generous with the contracts since I assume that UFA's will be overpaid as usual, but realistically the cap space would be closer to 1.5 million since I went a few hundred extra thousand higher on the signings. Either way that gives the new coaching staff 4 lines to roll and 3 pairing to roll plus potential to move different players up and down the lineup if need be. I chose to sign players with good puck possession stats, but you could always replace a guy like MacArthur with Torres. But that line-up would be able to provide some good scoring top to bottom and I'd trust all 4 lines in the playoffs. I would have loved to have been able to sign a guy like Boyd Gordon over Lappy, but I think he'll get 2 million+ thrown at him. Leopold can play top 4 minutes in case of injury which is why I signed him over a typical 3rd pairing d-man, plus he somewhat eases the loss of Edler, again I'd love to sign a guy like Mark Streit but I think he'll get some nice offers.

Agreed.

I don't understand why people cry wolf at demands like these, but this is the reality of player transactions.

Yup, UFA. Could also sign Jagr on a one year deal for less risk and more flexibility down the road since Horton would probably get 5-6 years with at least a limited NTC. Clarkson is another option, but I prefer Horton since has more skill. Plus that lineup gives the Canucks 4 good lines and 3 decent parings plus a top 10 pick in this year's draft to build the prospect pool. The second first rounder could even be used with the top 10 pick to move up, but I'd rather keep both first rounders and add two good prospects to the pool.

Some good thinking behind this Nucker. I did some similar calculations yesterday but had some more of our farm getting promoted (Jensen, for instance. Possibly Gaunce). Regarding UFAs, a few other options caught my eye but most at the top end would have to take a salary reduction:

Player (Current Salary)

Jerome Iginla ($7m) - no comment needed
Patrick Elias ($6m) - playmaker for the Kesler line, PP
Brendan Morrow ($4.1) - at something like $3m he'd add some vet quality to the 3rd line
Ryan Clowe ($3.6) - will get over-paid but provides versatility and can play all lines
Stephen Weiss ($3.0) - perfect fit as our 2nd line playmaking center, used to dealing with top pairing D
Valterri Filpula - another option at 2nd line C or W
David Clarkson ($2.66) - like Clowe, versatile and can score. Will get overpaid
Ryan O'Byrne ($1.8) - Tough D could be an upgrade on Alberts
Raffi Torres ($1.75) - 3rd/4th liner
Tyler Bozak ($1.5) - a cheaper 2nd line C option but no doubt he makes triple that as UFA
Damien Brunner ($1.35) - skilled 2nd/3rd liner that can score. Likely doesn't leave DET
Ray Emery - ($1.5) - the guy I originally wanted as back-up way back when, if he accepts the same salary he can back-up Schneids or Lu. CHI has Salak coming.
Brad Boyes ($1.0) - to good to be true at $1m, likely will get at least 3m
Dan Ellis ($800k) - vet back-up at cheap price. CAR have Peters coming
Al Montoya ($600k) - vet back-up at cheap price. Did well at NYI
Cam Janssen ($575K) - 4th line nut job but I've seen him put Chara on his a$$
Ben Lovejoy ($525k) - was clocking huge mins in the playoffs, decent depth D at cheap

Wouldn't get close to the same return. Probably wouldn't get a player half as useful as Burrows in return.

The Canucks lack top 6 forward depth—it wouldn't be the best idea to trade one away.

I think they would offload Looch before Bergy, and I am sure there would be a ton of teams looking for a Lucic type.

If the B's trade Bergy I would honestly poop a brick lol

- MrBeanTown

If Boston traded Bergeron they would get a massive return.

If Boston traded Lucic they would get a massive return.

They are the type of players every team wants, but very few teams have.

I've heard all the arguments. Tavares being nominated for the Hart as the 17th overall scorer is a complete joke. And to say he did it all alone is even a bigger joke. Moulson and Boyes are good. They also have some good puck moving D in Lubo and Streit. Everyone said Tavares made PA Parenteau what he was. I think he proved them all wrong as he scored more this year with out Tavares. Moulson scored 44 points this year.

Hall score 50 points in 45 games. 3 more points in 3 less games.

Tavares 12.7% of NYI overall points.
Next highest Islander Moulson 44 points

Hall 14.6% of Oilers overall points
Next highest Oiler - Gagner 38 points. not even the same line.

So I disagree that none of the Oilers 3 first cant hold Tavares's jock strap.

But what ever. Keep the Oiler hatred alive...

- Iggysbff

I'm an Oiler fan and HUGE supporter of HALL. I wouldn't trade Hall for Tavares I don't think (one of those "win wins" though...doesn't matter.

Tavares deserves his nomination this year though...more than Hall would had he been nominated.

they were certainly one of the greatest teams ever, I'm just having some fun with it right now. Poking the bear if you will. No harm no foul, just messing around.
- LeftCoaster

There is no doubt that the Oilers of the 80s were total arrogant aceholes. I didn't really see them as whiners though. I certainly never saw any of them go on national TV and proclaim that the other team were playing unfairly or that the reffing cost them A SERIES..lol

For the record I think that arrogance diminishes their successful history.

Explain to me why several Phi fans said they'd make the trade, and several fans of other teams also commented that several of the deals are plausible, if offers 1-10 overvalue the player?

Perhaps you're undervaluing Edler a bit?

- Fosco

In the past I have totally and completely undervalued Edler, guilty as charged. But those trades are so lopsided. It's typical on every thread and local fans always overvalue their players. I think the Oilers fans may be the worst for it as the players are all young and unproven.

To be fair in this instance though, we are talking about a youngish all-star defender that regularly puts up 40-50 pts, is big and hits hard, but can struggle with inconsistency. This isn't a fan base thinking their fringe 2nd liner (Raymond) is worth a mint, this is a desirable player to trade for and every serious pundit would agree. Whether each of those trade proposals could happen is obviously not realistic but certainly not all of them are out of the realm of the possible.

That might work, but I still don't think they get anything close to the value Burrows brings with his play.

Not sure how you could be unimpressed with his play? His production stayed relatively similar during a tumultuous year in which many other Canucks players production declined.

He was one of the only players bringing it consistently night in and night out.

They need to try to add a top6 player without removing another.

If EDM gets a top pairing D man it needs to be a shutdown guy. Don't need a guy of the same mould as J Schultz paired with J Schultz as 1-2. If EDM deals for a D man it should be a M Staal or Hjalmarsson not an Edler or Shattenkirk

To me I don't doubt most Canuck fans on here know exactly what edler is and they have described him quite well ... It's when they all start comparing him to recent defenseman deals and are expecting to get the same ... dealing a d man is tough now ... Look at the Erik Johnson deal or Alex goligoski ... Absolutely awful deals that most likely won't be repeated

Just out of curiosity, what is it that you are basing your opinions on?

Awful deals happen every year, GM's get fired, new (sometimes stupider) GM's get hired.
