They probably contacted many NHL players and took the one that would accept the least amount of money. There are probably statistics to getting a player that isn't hated either. They wouldn't want crosby or ovi because high hate, high cost.

Think as a business, it makes sense. Nobody hates him, he is good, he is cheap.

Geico has done about 4 commercials with Backstrom. That is the only one where he scores goals. He is the spokesman they wanted.
