a common misconception

there was no such thing as regional player rights ever.

montreal and toronto used their wealth to establish minor league teams and obtained players by signing them to exclusive deals.

it was simply first come first serve. its just that montreal and toronto were usually the ones who got there first.

there was never ever regional rights given to any NHL team ever in the history of the league.

EDIT: another thing to note: amateur signings ended in 1963 with the indroduction of the draft.

But....but...this can't be!!! Then all of the Habs cups are....real? That's UNpossible!!! Even Garnie said so.

I don't think the Leafs need more speed to beat the Bruins, they have shown the last 3 games that their speed/skill are more than enough to win games against the Bruins, and they have a good mix of toughness to not be intimidated too.

Where they need improvements is cutting down mistakes. However this will only happen as the team becomes more experienced and learns to be a little more patient.

Speed that can forecheck , play the wall and can chip in is a problem, Orr does none of that and against the Bruins, it's how you beat them.

Bruins for the most part are one pass and out, Leafs are very weak on the boards, they won't go far unless, 1) they are willing to do it and pay the price or 2) they bring players in that will fight along the boards for the puck and win battles. This is a glaring weakness and is the main reason for very little sustained pressure in the O zone.

You guys really don't seem to grasp the whole extent of the Habs/Bruins rivalry.

My favorite draft year was 1968 when the Habs had the first three picks in the first round...

prior to the establishment of the draft, which more or less became the same process as it is today in 1967 (it was different between 62-67, there were irregularities. Certain teams which shall remain nameless but have had a few brushes with the law historically, or fan clubs of those teams "invested" in individual minor league teams and in some cases bought entire leagues. this was done to essentially hide players.

and there were draft exclusions given to teams sporadically, such as during expansion drafts - allowing teams to hang on to a disproportionately large portion of their teams.

if you want to investigate this a little further, you need to look at how many players each team (particularly the original six teams) lost when the WHA came into being.
