You don't need a brilliant GM to draft 1st overall. You could have asked a highly trained orangutang to go up there and make the pick for Crosby. Same goes for Kane, they were consensus 1st overall picks and all those GMs had to do is look at an ISS ranking chart that had both those guys at the top of the list every month.

LOL - you're going to cite Crosby who is a generational player?

Also, remember - the Sabres perpetually draft 5th-15th so sorry, we ain't getting a #1 Kane/Stamkos type player.

Ott: Players love Rolston.

And this goes a long way. I hate my boss. I swallow my pride sometimes and laugh at his jokes, but I will NEVER go through a brick wall for him.

My last boss? I told him when we parted ways that I'd work for him ANYWHERE.

Something to be said for liking the guy you work for.

Did they have the worst GM in the league at the helm during those periods too?
- sambarugh

Shero came into a Pittsburgh team that already had MAF, Crosby and Malkin. His first pick as the Pittsburgh GM was 2nd overall and had the choice between J Staal, Toews, Nicklas Backstrom and Kessel. His next 1st round picks were Angelo Esposito (bust), Simon Despres, Beau Bennett, Joe Morrow, Derrick Pouliot, Olli Määttä. I like who Pittsburgh took in 2012 but I'm willing to put it out there that the Sabres have drafted better than Pittsburgh since 2008.

I only brought it up because you asked if Pittsburgh and Chicago had the worst GM in the league and I countered with the fact that it wouldn't have mattered.

I don't understand where this thing about the Sabres drafting history is coming from. This is our first top 10 pick in years. And really how many people can actually believe that this team won't be bottom 5 in an 82 game season without Vanek and Miller.

I like Rolston, don't mind him being the coach. But I don't put stock into whether players like him. I want a coach who players respect and have pride playing for. You don't have to like a coach but you have to respect his authority and know that his direction is the right direction. Ruff lost that, who knows if Rolston will earn the respect. I'm willing to give him some time though

Not being sarcastic. Just have a different point of view. I think the experts on here predicting the end of the world are hilarious.

I not only agree with this I would like to expand on it. I think Rolston earned this opportunity. He came in to one of the most awkward situations in sports in recent memory and definitely the most awkward in Hockey. A team that had its coach for 17 years, and has Ryan Miller in the lockerroom, and is losing badly and you get a call in Rochester one afternoon that you have to coach those guys that night in Toronto. And its not like Rolston will be holding back a cup contender. Its the perfect time to see what he can do. He did decent things with a short deck already. I think its a sound move.

The Sabres were terrible this year. Ruff had a .382 pts%. With the same guys or with more AHL calibur guys, Rolston had a .560 pts%. Pretty good record for a guy coaching a train wreck roster.

Boy, and they thought the booing was bad this year. I won't spend a nickel on anything Sabres for a while but if I were at the opening game next season I would start booing before the first faceoff. This team has gone from bad to worse under Gas Pipe Pegula, what a train wreck he is so far. He can build whatever he wants down town and give millions to the Penn State Sandusky's but if he continues to fail with the NHL team he will be nothing but a bust of an owner. Man I usually don’t get to jazzed up but this RR decision is really getting my “goat”.

How long have you been holding on to that one? Just had to drop that Gem eh?

Pittsburgh should be a lot better than they are with that much talent. That whole team has underperformed, excepet for two years. Thier goal tending is terrible and Crosby is turning into a exceptionally skilled version of Timmy C.

Crosby playing 50 games is better than any Sabre playing 82. Timmy C wishes he could produce like Crosby, and I loved Connolly for a while

as an Isles fan that just finally now is seeing some success from our lengthy rebuild, I feel for you guys. You had all the pieces and then due to ownership had to let some go, finally got a new owner and your gm added the wrong pieces at very high dollars. I will say after having Erhoff snub the Isles, it's nice to see him getting stuck in a rebuilding situation, just as the Isles are starting to turn a corner.

I do feel for you guys though, having a new owner willing to spend could have (and should have) resulted in a lot better decisions from your GM.

The isles may have turned a corner but they will find a telephone pole to smash into.

A good coach gets his players to play for him, either because they like him, or they're scared to death of him. Lindy became neither, and I don't think that Rolston is anywhere near the latter. Here's hoping he's the former.

I do feel Grigorenko is in the same boat as Myers. He now knows he needs to take his profession a lot more seriously than he does. If Rolston can get these two, along with mostly everyone else, to do that, he will have success as a coach. If Tyler Myers played half as well as he did in 2010, this team is in the playoffs no problem.

I blame the FNC facilities for Myers troubles, they must have raised that blue line , becasue Myers keeps tripping and falling over it....

I've heard a few people complaining about that, and I really don't see the big deal. They're making fun of Boston as a city, not the tragedy they faced. It's a play on words, nothing more. What happened in Boston was tragic, but that doesn't change the fact that, just like everything else in the news, the media over-sensationalized it. That's all that sign is making fun of.
