As far as the rebuild sh1t goes... It doesn't work overnight... Ask Pens' fans (the Pens had 5 years of lottery picks in a row) or Blackhawks' fans (made the playoffs once in a ten year period)...

This I know. And I for one am prepared for a painful few years. I think it can be done quicker but I'm not holding my breath.

Thank you math doctor.

"definition of an elite player is Lee Stempniak. ". Those were your words, so allow me to correct you on that one.

I'm curious, when the Oilers were at the stage we are at, with "nothing going for them" we're you one of those losers saying "we got the 1st overall, just watch us next year, we're going to be awesome!" What am I saying, of course you were. And you're still saying it. I didn't come here to trash Schultz anyway, just to add an objective point of view as to why people shouldn't be too upset that he wasn't nominated.

And, uh, maybe I'm a homer, but I'm quite happy with Brodie. He has a much better 2 way game.

As for when rebuilds started, you and you're brethren should have a confab to sort that out. You manipulate the dates to suit your needs.

Keep cheering the losses my friend.

Are we cheering for Calgary now

I agree that Shultz does not belong on that list but Yaks does for sure.

Show up for 10 games and win the Calder...

Huberdeau was there all year with the worst team in the league! If he doesn't win it's criminal. Saad played for the President's Trophy team and Gallagher is a rat like Marchand.

Stats are the bottom line. Landeskog was trash til the last 25 games last year then he lit it up and won it.

Keep cheering the endless wins and everlasting glory of feaster management.

It's up to a GM to build the remaining pieces for 1st overalls to have any effect. Tambo was trash and I hope MacT doesn't follow in his footsteps.

I don't think Schultz should have been nominated, but his defensive game is fine. He's worn out from playing 2x his regular schedule and really shouldn't be burning himself out anymore at the WHC. I have no worries for his future.

Yes you are a homer. You're the 1/1000 people that'd take Brodie over Schultz, although Brodie is quite good.

I'm admitting EDM's been in a rebuild for 6 years not 3. Although CGY's been in a rebuild for 3 years, it's not just beginning.

I'm surprised Galchenyuk's name hasn't come up. he had a fine season. he's ridiculously skilled. 2012 redraft'd be very close between him and Yak

I can't understand anyone questioning Huberdeau. The kid is unreal. He should walk away with the trophy, no questions asked. Forget 40 with Pitt, he'd put up 40 with the players Yakupov was playing with. He's all alone in Florida. Tomas Fleischman? Yeah, okay.

Now, a week before the season finished, I wouldn't have said Yakupov, because he was something like 8th in the scoring race for rookies, or something like that. Given he finished with 6 points in 3 games, I can see him in there. Perhaps, however, that's exactly why he was overlooked. People had their minds made up by that time. Just a thought.

I actually thought from the beginning that Schultz should be there though. 4 points back of the rookie scoring race as a dman, that shoulders a lot of responsibility in Edmonton. Schultz doesn't have a lot of decent company back there on the Edmonton D line, like Huberdeau has no help with Florida.

I don't think I would really complain too much about Saad though. He's had a great season. I can see any of Saad, Schultz, and Yakupov there as the runners up. I don't think Gallagher should be there though. Can't see Brodin either.

???????????????????????????????????????
???????????????????????????????????????

Clearly another commenter that's never seen an oilers game.

Yak played with Belanger and Jones for half the year. He played with Hall for like the remaning 10 games and scored 11 goals. I can't imagine the damage Yak'll do when he's not 19 playing on the 5th line.

The latter half of the season Nail was one of our best players and he started the season quite well all things considered (KHL-WJC-NHL, 9-game road trip and such). Sure he had a pretty length goalless drought, but you say that like Huberdeau didn't. He had a few droughts himself. To discount what Yakupov did because he had droughts that almost every rookie suffers from is wrong especially in a year when the scoring race is so close. I include Yakupov in the voting over Gallagher, but I don't think he wins.

Flash and Mueller are two fairly skilled players. Belanger is an offensive blackhole and Yak was shuffled around lines ALL YEAR giving him little opportunity to develop the chemistry that Huberdeau had.

Ya know.. who gives two shyts about the Calder trophy? I'm sorry, yay for whomever wins, but I want a damn Stanley Cup, not some trophy these kids can't even win again. Big deal.. Huberdeau had a great season and was a leader on this team. I don't think Saad should be on the list.. it's easy to look good on a team with Toews, Sharp, Kane, Keith, etc.. Gallagher.. I don't know much about. I think Yakupov should be on the list as well as Brodin.

Again, this is an individual achievement and I guess I'm more "big picture".

- Panthers88

not only is it an individual trophy, but it's also probably the most uneven of playing fields of any trophy. 18 year olds playing alone on the worst team in the league competing against 24 year olds playing on president's trophy winners. It's conversation fodder, and means little about the future potential in comparison to each other.

Plus you live in Deadmonton, the city of chumps!!

Schultz can't be on that list with that dreadful +/-.
Yakupov deserves to be on the list.
Brodin deserves the trophy.
Huberdeau a runner up.
Gallegher 2nd runner up.
Saad...? Really? I don't get that one.

I cant stand +/-. I wish the NHL would do away with the stat entirely.

I was only using 24 as 25 is thw age they lose eligibility. Just highlighting the possible age (and other) differences. Although I can see why it would seem like I was referring Yak/Huberdeau and Saad, I wasnt actually referring to anyone specifically.

When it gets low enough it does indicate something, especially if your teams differential is much better. Schultz slowed after a while. Yak should have been there.

looked at with proper context, it can be useful. But it doesnt translate well comparing players from team to team. Comparing Schultz's +/- to Saad's as a boost to Saad and knock on Schultz is just stupid.

My bigger issue with it is how misused and abused it is, like it has been so badly in this thread.
