Did you just compare one of the best ranked dmen in the league to robbie shremp?

That would be like comparing Iginla to Nigel Dawes except dawes got more points for the flames than schremp did for the oil.

- bsteinley

Best ranked in the league???? He was a -17! That's at the bottom of the league, dude. Sure the guy can score but in case you missed it, his position is DEFENSE! It's nice to add points but maybe try to prevent a few as well. 1 dimensional players don't get votes for the calder. Sorry.

I never said he should win the Calder. I just said he is a great defensive prospect. He is an offensive dman and a rookie. He needs to work on his defensive game, sure but doesn't change the fact that he isn't comparable to schremp. I never once said he should be in the Calder Race.

I always said no Oiler would win it. I just thought Yak would get nominated. They can and have nominated 4 people before. It doesn't have to be 3 people. I agree Gall will win just from the sheer number of fans in that area.

Can't believe saad is on this list. Even gallagher cause he had a good stretch but he's nothing compared to yakupov or brodin.

I believe he has won an award for being the top defensemen the last 3 seasons wherever he has played

That is true he took the AHL award and only played half the season this year. He is also playing on team Canada right now. Don't see Hub there.

In my opinion, when you're playing on one of the top lines in hockey the expectations should be even higher for you. Saad's stats still weren't as good as Yak's despite playing in a better situation.
- jtommyt

For the first 23 games he barely played. He was not on Toews line the whole season. Once he earned his spot up there, he was a dominant player.

All Saad's arguments need to be for Brodin aswell ...defensive system, playing with top defender in the league in Suter, not looked upon to provide offense ...life has been pretty easy for Brodin this season

The Calder is a cursed trophy anyways. The past four winners, Steve Mason, Tyler Myers, Jeff Skinner, and Gabriel Landeskog, have all had injury troubles and have not played anywhere near as good as they did in their rookie season. Even RNH had a bad year after just being nominated for the Calder. I would say the Eastern snub is good news for the Oilers. I think Schultz's plus minus was pretty scary, but only 8 minutes of penalties playing over 20 minutes per game shows great composure and discipline for a rookie. As for Yakupov, his personality is too big for a bunch of jealous reporters that couldn't play hockey if their life depended on it.

Cloutier, if you think Shultz should have been nominated over the other 3 guys, you're clued out as well.

What was his plus/minus this season?? Enough said.

Points aren't everything & the 3 nominated deserve to be there!!

Don't count on the Oilers being in Edmonton in 2 more seasons. If the arena deal falls through due to the missing money they will move. I agree with your assessment regarding Yaks and Schultz, for sure Yaks should be there. Don't know what the problem is but it sure seems strange that both would be ignored.

wtf?

Yakupov is a whiny little female dog who has his day coming. Someone is gonna get him good and he will be out of the league in 5 years.

I'd agree they were up there....but I think the roles each of the other rookies played on their teams had a little bit bigger of an impact than merely points, and obviously the success of their teams.

Saad for example came in and found a spot on Chicago's first line, not to mention he helped his team win the Presidents trophy.

Gallagher helped his team go from absolute s#it to NE Division Champions, not to mention he was a +10 on the year.

Huberdeau would be the only exception as the Panthers weren't a good team this year. That being said he was second on the team in scoring and played a large roll on that team.

If it was up to me I would swap out Huberdeau and put in Brodin. For a kid like Brodin to come in and play the minutes he played on a playoff team is pretty remarkable. The points weren't there but that's not all what hockey is about!

Shultz and Yakupov had good years, but for the majority of the season Yakupov wasn't effective out there until he found his game towards the end of the year. Schultz had his moments as well but struggled with his defensive game. Not to mention the Oilers had another down year.

- The-O-G

A) Saad was playing with Toews and Hossa/Sharp. Hard to say he earned his points this year.

B)+- doesn't really matter unless your +- is as bad as J Schultz, especially when you're on a top 5 team in the east

Doesn't matter when they got hot. Bottom line is Yak tied for most points with Huberdeau, but Yak had more goals. Difference was Yak was a -4 and Huberdeau a -15. Yes +- is useless but those were the two differences, so there's no reason Huberdeau should be ahead of Yak.

Top 3 should have been
1.Brodin
2.Yakupov
3. huberdeau/Dillon

-17 on the 7th worst team in the league. Also he was used to playing 40 games a year in college, so it's expected he burn out after 60+ games. If you saw any of his first 20 games, you'd know he's not a defensive liability.

When JBo was a -21 last year for CGY, did anyone question his defensive play?
