Schultz is all about the offensive numbers that were mostly on the PP...not impressive...plus the guy was abysmal defensively ...Yakupov probably should have been a nominee but definitely wouldn't have won the Calder...at the end of the day people only remember who wins the Calder and not who was nominated ...it's gonna be Huberdeau no matter what. - keatondixon
My bet goes to Gallagher. I don't think he should win, but that's who I see winning. |

How should Schultz be considered over any of those three or perhaps even Brodin?
He wasnt jilted, over half his points were on the PP and he was a 'dazzling' -17.
Hardly say he was jilted.... |

Yak being omitted to me is the only surprise. it was a great rookie class, they all did well. - mykokes
Well I think that is the big point. These are actual people that worked hard. Schultz, Brodin and Yak played good hockey this year. I know Yak was said to be the first one on the ice last one off at practices. His work ethic was described as amazing by the coaching staff. I just hope that the politics of something like this doesn't get him down. Really if it is close, just put in a 4th nomination. These are really just kids in the end. Most didn't pick their team, their lines or how much they get to play.
There is no reason to leave the highest goal scorer out. I don't care what role you though he played or if there is a bias. The guy worked hard. He left home at a young age to play in Canada so he wouldn't be seen as a Russian player. The guy is still learning english and the only other russian on his team is a drunk that spends his off season in prison camps. The guy he played most with and gets along best with (from what I hear) is a 39 year old that has a mullet.
He doesn't have a charmed life. He lives for this game. |

Your right. Saad was the reason Chicago won the presidents trophy. You solved it. They were lucky he was their to carry his line mates like Toews and Kane. Those guys would have been lost without hiim. Plus their defense is terrible. I wouldn't for a second take trade all of edmontons for Duncan Keith alone. I can see you are a Calgary fan and thus it is probably time for your medication. Ask them to lower your dose, then come back and read what you wrote. - bsteinley
All I said was he helped his team win the presidents trophy, and that I think that factored into his nomination.
Nice rant though, brah.............. |

So how much of Brodin's success is because of him and how much is because of Suter? We saw first hand in Edmonton how Pronger made Marc-Andre Bergeron look like a real good d-man.
Personally I don't care too much about the Calder, yes it's a nice bonus to these kids but in the long run it means jack poop. The best player to ever play the game never won it, arguable the best player in the game today never won it, the best sniper in today's game never won it, the best goalie in the league today never won it and the best d-man in the game today never won it. - Lahey
What? Tyler Myers totally won the Calder not too long ago.

Clouts we are in total agreement. THose idiots are retarded if they don't even put yakupov and shultz in the running. It's bullbeep. |

More than hallf of Schultz points were on the PP. Reminds me of another former Oiler... Rob Schremp. Terrible at defence and can only really score on the PP. Not quite as bad, but..... |

Gallagher simply hasn't done enough to prove he is the "top" rookie in the league this season imo ...Brodin has been great but playing for a very good defensive team and being paired with Suter (made Weber great) makes things a lot easier for him ...Huberdeau has been the lone bright spot on a last place team and he deserves the award. |

In my opinion, when you're playing on one of the top lines in hockey the expectations should be even higher for you. Saad's stats still weren't as good as Yak's despite playing in a better situation. |

Ya know.. who gives two shyts about the Calder trophy? I'm sorry, yay for whomever wins, but I want a damn Stanley Cup, not some trophy these kids can't even win again. Big deal.. Huberdeau had a great season and was a leader on this team. I don't think Saad should be on the list.. it's easy to look good on a team with Toews, Sharp, Kane, Keith, etc.. Gallagher.. I don't know much about. I think Yakupov should be on the list as well as Brodin.
Again, this is an individual achievement and I guess I'm more "big picture". |

I think the players probably do. Not about the trophy but the nomination. |

Yeah...
As far as nominations go, it isn't all about stats. The award goes to the best rookie on his team.. not on the top line or with the best +/-. Not how it works.. Huberdeau, Yakupov, and Brodin.. in my opinion.. best exemplify this. They were on not-so-good teams, and had a great successful first season. They all lead their teams not just with offense, but with attitude, leadership, and they grew as players. |

They only have room for three nominees, and frankly I find it hard to discredit any of those guys. They all played big time roles for their teams, two of which were actually strong teams. I don't know about the Oilers getting snubbed, maybe those two were #4 and #5? Huberdeau has this thing locked up anyways, doing what he did on a team as bad as Florida was impressive. May as well not even have anyone else on the ballot. |

Richard Cloutier: Yakupov; Schultz Jilted in Calder Race - Maxbone
I agree with your argument that Yakupov should have been on the ballot and should have probably won it, but Justin Schultz should not be on the ballot.
While his points stats were decent, he has a huge lack in his game that doesn't put him at the same level of Yakupov. I dislike Huberdeau a lot, but it should be Huberdeau, Yakupov and Brodin. |

Did you just compare one of the best ranked dmen in the league to robbie shremp?
That would be like comparing Iginla to Nigel Dawes except dawes got more points for the flames than schremp did for the oil. |

All Saad's arguments need to be for Brodin aswell ...defensive system, playing with top defender in the league in Suter, not looked upon to provide offense ...life has been pretty easy for Brodin this season |
