Right at the cap ceiling without using Pronger's LTIR money. UFA's add Stalberg and Rosival. Trade Mez for a 2nd rounder and buyout Briere and still room for another substantial UFA.

i think you're overlooking what i mentioned about the caps approach and how that could have saved us the agg of the bryz situation. the contract is poison and he hasn't been worth it. after 30 yrs of mediocre or outright failure in net, having two promising young guys who already have seasoning is appealing to me.

if there are a glut of alternatives out there, it will be a buyers mkt that we can exploit. from that standpoint we'd come out of an amnesty w/ more cap space and/or more manageable term? besides, what are you hanging on to? biron-level goaltending @ almost twice the price? if it turns out that there aren't as many workable alternatives this off season, then we can live w/ bryz for another yr.

- isaiah520

I wasn't overlooking it, I just chose not to comment on it because the approach they took didn't require moving any assets away for those prospects. They were all drafted by the capitals I believe. You can still buyout Bryz next season if warranted. Why do we need to make a knee-jerk goalie movie this off-season when there really aren't any good alternatives. The only way I see Bryz getting bought out is after the flyers make a trade and need cap space or they are convinced he's too big of a distraction for anyone to bear (which I think is ridiculous). I'd stay the course for another year with a healthy D corp and see what happens.

Would it really be the worst thing in the world if just for once the Flyers showed some patience.
Don't trade any of the young forwards, take the best player available at 11 or trade down.
Only trade up, if you can do so without giving up more than a 3rd rounder and perhaps a good but not great prospect like Cousins. If that will get them to Edmonton's #7, I would do the deal.
Sign a stop gap defenseman like Mark Streit to a 2 year deal and go with a D of:
Streit-Schenn
Timonen-Coburn
Grossman-Mez or Gus
Hold on to Mezaros for now, if he gets healthy and returns to the lineup next year, his value will go up.

I would still buyout Bryz and Briere, going into the season with ample cap space is not such a bad thing as it will allow the flexibility to deal during the season.

If Lavy commits to playing a toned down, more defensively responsible version of his system, there is no reason that they can't compete for a playoff spot next year. I don't see any way they are a cup contender next year, so why break up a good young nucleus of forwards?

keep the simplified D system, trade Mez (Not for a second rounder, for Gardiner. We can get him for cheap now and in acouple seasons he can be a 50+ point scorer and worth a poop ton more than a 2nd).

well, we're not gonna agree on this one. i do think there will be a number of alternatives available thru trade or FA( Lu, backstrom, emery, bernier, et al) and that could lower the cost...but, maybe not.

I don't think mez is a trade option at all. that shoulder is a chronic problem and his recovery took 6 mos last time.

Anybody see the calls that gave the Pens the 5 on 3? I turned away for a few minutes and boom...Pens have a 2-man advantage. I'd like to say I'm surprised, but that would be a lie.

what is it going to take to acquire, through trade and then what will the fa's demand. I'm pretty sure Luongo is going to be somewhere around what Bryzgalov is now, which makes it virtually a lateral move. Emery is just about due for another long term injury and as for backstrom he's another injury risk. I think you're selling Bryzgalov a tad short, after all he was mostly average on a bad team all year. I admit I'm more comfortable moving away from him with the emergence of Mason, but how real was that flash in the pan? You keep comparing Bryzgalov to Biron and I agree to an extent however, its mostly cause bryzgalov plays down, on the other hand I don't really remember Biron playing up a notch like Bryzgalov can. I don't see how waiting another year to pull the trigger will hurt all that bad.

Watching NHL network on a daily basis there's at least one game a night where the calls are questionable. IMO the game is just too fast sometimes for these officials. Human beings make mistakes and its part of the game. Officiating is like the weather, female dog all you want but it aint gonna change. Might as well just deal with it.

Sure...human beings, fast game, mistakes are made, etc. Still, I prefer the days when you'd practically have to kill someone on the ice to give a team a 2-man advantage in the playoffs. And the fact the Pens got exactly what they needed to get them back in the game isn't even a little surprising.

here's just some of the things that bugged me.

"I don't want this to sound like excuses because all teams had a shortened schedule and just a one-week training camp," Snider said. "Some teams did well [the previous season] and were happy with their system. We got knocked out by New Jersey in the second round, and New Jersey dominated, and I think the coach wanted to tweak the system."

"Paul's overall performance is outstanding," said Snider, giving Holmgren a mulligan for this year, a pronouncement that will bring grief to the countless tweeters who want a new general manager.

That is annoying. Although Snider's comments don't really align with Peter's end of season presser.
