The two sides I'm referring to in a common Hockey metaphor is the offensive and defensive side. A lot of fans only consider the offensive side, and scoring goals.

What's wrong with the 3 center approach? Worked okay for Pittsburgh in 2009.
- jmatchett383

That'd be fine if we didn't have weaknesses elsewhere. I don't know about you, but I'd rather have an elite defense man, an elite forward, and an amazing forward rather than an elite forward and two amazing forwards. It's much more balanced and I think we'd be a much better team for it. Don't forget that we have Laughton, too. He's a projected second-liner. We can't keep him on the 4th line forever. So that would leave us with an elite forward, and elite defenseman, an amazing forward, and a great forward instead of an elite forward, two amazing forwards, and a great forward, all just in our centers. The flyers have always gone by the philosophy of drafting the best available player, because later the greatest value will be the most helpful i aquiring strengths where we need them. I think it might be time that the flyers cashed in some value to get some value where they need it.

Retiring on his own terms is a plus, but I'm sure Pronger also would like to continue to enjoy a lot of the team and union benefits that are afforded to him as an active player, namely Snider covering all of his medical costs. Plus, getting his contract paid in full isn't so bad, either.
- Tomahawk

The contracts are insured so he'd get his money regardless. I'm sure retiring officially isn't high on his priorities but for a fan having those loose strings dangling around are an unnecessary distraction. We don't have tagging space, we don't have cap space until October 1, etc.

Still pretty raw but you can see the potential is there in all phases. He's 6'5'' currently.

Looking forward to London vs Barrie in the OHL Finals.

2013 Draft prospect Nikita Zadorov's (London Knights) hit on 2012 Capitals 1st rounder Tom Wilson and then immediate fight with Mitchell Heard.

Oh my... Wilson's been killing London too. Remind me, how much did that package cost?

London won the series in 5 games but yes Tom Wilson was the only Plymouth player to really show up in that series.

Hockeystreams in $99 for NHL, AHL, OHL, WHL, QMJHL, KHL and for some reason WWE, UFC, & I think some Boxing. Not to mention many of the IIHF tourneys

The team is required to have insurance coverage on the top 5 contracts. The player is not. I agree that a player that is not expected to play again, should not count on the Off Season Cap. The problem with that, is just like they have with other Cap issues, teams will exploit that and use it to circumvent.

Yeah, tagging space, not being able to bank cap space during the season, and a dead roster spot against the 50-limit are all significant penalties... the OP kind of made it sound like we were getting a free pass with the situation.

Didn't they have problems insuring some the back-diving over-40 deals? Not sure if it pertains to Pronger, or only to Kovalchuk/Luongo.

Why does Schenn not have a spot on this team long term unless he goes to the Wing?
- MJL

I think it's more that couturier doesn't have a spot. Schenn and Couturier are both projected 1st line/borderline elite centers. It's one thing to have 2 players like that as Pittsburgh does, its another thing to have 3 centers like that plus a projected 2nd line center. There's no balance.

Chara wasn't exactly Chara until his 6th-season in the NHL... I wonder if Zadorov would be that long away, and if he is, would the Flyers end up playing the role of the Islanders if they drafted him.

You never know... but I think he'll more along the lines of Anton Volchenkov in the NHL.

Couturier absolutely has a spot. And there is no such thing as having too many good young Centers.

The dumbest thing in the World is going to be next Season, the Cap is going to be artificially lowered to 64.3. But then after next Season, I bet it goes up to well over the 70.2M it was this past Season. As much as a 10M rise. So the League got their 50/50, but the same problems will exist.
