You must too young to remember Rick Macleish. He was the best I ever saw at shooting right off the faceoff, used to score 3 or 4 of those every year.

- BiggE

I remember seeing MacLeish play in the early 80's.

And I remember MacLeish's attempted comeback in '83-'84.

But I was definitely too young to have seen him in his prime.

I met MacLeish once in what is now called PJ Whelihan's at the WFC. He's a small dude.

i think luke schenn played better without timmo and got way better as more responsibilities were thrown on him...bad comparison.
- Philly1980

Luke had, what, 3-games w/o Kimmo in the lineup?

get the tape of the Flyers vs the Soviet Red Army team in 1976. He is (imo) the best skater on the ice that game, and there were some really highly skilled Russians.

They all were back then. If you were 6'1 195 you were considered a big guy.

He's got literally everything that Seth Jones has, maybe not as likely to lead a rush, but everything else is still there. He's also had very little help -- we like to think the Flyers' D looks like a band of misfits, but the Avs' D is a degree or two worse.... he's like Luke Schenn w/o Timo.

I wouldn't shut the book on Johnson just yet. His attitude is good and he plays a hard game, so there's still hope he'll turn it around. Case in point, it took Chara a long six-seasons to really put it all together w/ the Sens, but look at him now.

- Tomahawk

cost would have to be right and i don't think chara is a good comparison because EJ strikes me as not having the physical maturity issues zdeno did. it looks like EJ doesn't think the game at the level one would think he could. if luke had EJs physical talent, he'd be a Norris candidate.

Macleish's skills were off the charts, he was easily the most talented Flyer of the cup era by far. If he had Clarke's drive and work ethic he would have been one of the all time greats. There were many stories of Clarke having to pull him aside during many of their playoff runs and basically tell him that he needed to give his all if they were going to succeed.

Macleish was one of those guys that would be invisible for 55 minutes or so and then all of sudden he would just take over the game and score the big goal. Much like Briere, many of his best moments came during the playoffs. In 56 playoff games from 74-77 he scored 35 goals and 71 points!

Understood, but Hawk seemed even shorter than some of the other Flyers alums I've met....

Wikipedia lists Hawk at 5'11". If he's 5'11", Danny Briere is 6'2".

He's had some knee and back issues over the years, he may have lost an inch or 2 due to that, remember the guy is in his 60s

I have one of those "10 Greatest Flyers games" ever box sets and that game is one of them.

You just gave me a great idea to help with the jonseing I have for Flyers playoff hockey.

One of the best goals I have ever seen was by Macleish in the late 70's against Boston at home. He stripped the puck from a Boston winger by the far side offensive boards, went around the defenseman on that side, deked Gilbert to his backhand, lost the angle, slid the puck behind Gilbert through the crease, skated around the net, picked up the puck on the near side and flipped into the open net past a second diving Bruin. I wish I could find it on youtube.

I'm still holding out hope that Nurse pulls a Couturier and slips to 11.
