Did you (or anyone) know how any of that would have turned out 5 years later?

No.

What is the most likely way it would play out?

The guy picked at 5 would be an NHL player and the guy picked in the third round won't ever crack a line up.

- kencan98

So, even without hindsight, you think that dropping 4 spots and adding all of those picks was a bad move? If so, please become a GM, I'd like the Flyers to make some trades with you.

Dude, I don't need to go back. I as well as everyone else clearly remembers you calling us idiots for not agreeing with you about Boyes. Stop the BS. I don't need to go back. I have nothing to do at work today but I can still find beeter things to do. Besides, you'll ignore those posts like you do with everyone you are called out for or are WRONG about.
- Cptmjl

You won't go back because I never called anyone names. It was the other way around and that can easily be seen on this blog and others.

i really hope your GM doesn't share that logic of "we should only fix it once it's a problem".

you need to plan ahead, otherwise you get screwed. a goalie can take 4-5 years to develop before they're ready to play. your GM should already be looking at options in net after Nabby unless you wanna go back to rotating al montoya and dipietro in net for another half a decade.

if the rangers followed that logic and signed prust to a 2.5 mil a year deal (and not worry about the cap situation until it was an issue), then we'd be forced to give up on one of mcdonagh, stepan, or hagelin this offseason because we couldn't afford them.

- rangerdanger94

youre only thinking from a prospect standpoint...(which they have 3 of already, dont ignore that)

im talking getting a goalie via trade...a GM would be stupid to trade for a goalie 4-5 years in advance...ask the flyers.

Yes I do. You have to look at the complete picture. The Islanders are the worst drafting team in the NHL and have been for a while. There's no reason to try and outsmart the room. Just make the pick and move on. You have a better chance at that strategy working then you do the strategy they've been using.

no i'm saying that time will tell but you guys should be praying that your GM is already looking at goalie options. it's pretty obvious nabby doesn't have too many years left and do you seriously think you'd be in the playoffs if dipietro or al montoya was in net all season long?

again, maybe....but probably not.

you can't compare the isles to Pitt. Pitt's 2nd line center in Malkin is better than your first line center in JT. then they also had jordan staal who could be a first line center on half the teams in the league. Crosby - Malkin - Staal with a young Fleury in net is a lot different than JT - Josh Bailey - ??? and an over the hump nabakov whos gonna retire soon which leaves you with DiPietro or Al Montoya in net.

If they're a bad drafting team, it's wiser to get a lot of picks. 4 spots in a weak draft (which 2008 was considered to be) is not a lot. So, you keep a top-10 pick, throw a dart, and hope it works. Then, you throw another dart with the 2nd rounder and hope it works. If you're bad at drafting, you want as many chances to draft, hoping that one of the picks works out.

Really, please become a GM and make some trades for Flyers picks, they'd be more than willing to help you out.

Edit: I will give you Strome was a bad pic, though.

i'll admit i don't know anything about your goalie prospects.

a GM isn't stupid to trade for a goalie 4-5 years in advance if the goalies are young and show potential. first off, saying nabakov has 4-5 years left is a stretch. i'll be surprised if he plays at this level again after next season. secondly, look at Yzerman stocking up goalie prospects like Ben Bishop and Anders Lindback in advance. Tampa went from having a huge goalie problem to be stocked with legitimate potential options. if you guys could've traded for a Bishop or a Lindback, you guys would be in perfect position but those guys are very hard to come by.

maybe you guys could get bernier but no one knows if he's a legit starting goalie and the asking price is probably too much of what you guys wanna pay for. if you trade for a goalie you WILL overpay because there just isn't many options.

Not childish at all. History repeats itself unless you learn from the mistakes and change. They've never done it in the past and there's no reason why we should think they'll do it in the future.
- kencan98

Now there's a fan! Once again, because the prior management screwed this up...it guarantee's this one will too! First it's because we didn't allow them to develop, then it's because we chose the wrong guy, then it's the fans fault

Because Robert Nilsen sucked, it guarantee's Strome will suck. Nothing to do with the level of talent, just the fact that they're Islanders guarantee's that....awesome logic! Why would you even watch the games thinking like that?

i'm talking about the pens team that won the cup....you keep comparing the current isles to the 07 pens and comparing the isles in 2 years to the stanley cup champion pens.

Put it this way, if you go back 10 years (starting at the 2003 draft), if the Islanders picked the player ranked in the spot they were picking, they'd be a much better team today then they are.

You can do that from 2008 forward as well and the same will be true but you really only have 2 years because 2010 forward is a little early.

And I wouldn't really be trading for picks right now with the Isles unless it's a Streit/Deadline situation and I've said over and over again that the team has to be right. I don't know if I'd let go Streit for the Flyers second round pick.

you're just all over the place man.

you said it would be dumb to trade for a goalie 4-5 years in advance....why the hell would you say that unless you think you have a goalie in place for the next 4-5 years? if you agree that nabakov only has 1 more good year then you should be agreeing with me that your GM needs to figure out your goalie situation ASAP.
