You really shouldn't count Vans contract. since it was a flub .Miller was our last defense to stop the puck from going into the net. The team as a whole , pretty much sucked wind this season. Miller let goals in left and right, and high glove side. The forwards couldn't score against back-up goalies. Miller was the so called leader of the team. I'm not a Miller fan because of his contract that he was sposed to live up to. He did ok some of the time but not enough for my liking.

sure he (vanek) did. but I agree we should have taken the 1st round picks. Yes Van called off all negotiations, but management was screwed after that good season all the players had. Oilers GM knew what he was doing and either he got vanek or lost the 1st rounders. He didn't seem to care either way. Darcy is the one that said ALL OFFERS WILL BE MATCHED. which set the stage for what happened. If it wasn't for the Oilers . i could see another team with an offer sheet around 5m which is what most thought that year. Vanek at 5m would have been about right.

I dont want to make excuses for Darcy, but Im pretty sure the only clear directive Darcy got from Golisano was "I want payroll at this number and no higher". Darcy knew we had a cup team. You think he wanted to see everyone walk? He also wanted a paycheck still. Vanek only got signed as a last ditch effort to save the team from a complete public relations metdown.

That being said I've loved watching Vanek be a Sabre. I feel he's lived up to that contract. However, the irony is if we never decided to match, the fans would have been completely demoralized and Golisano's being cheap would have actually lost him more money.
