But the best team in the OHL did decide to take him on. I haven't followed his junior year a lot, but I remember people being worried he wouldn't really play at all because he was on a good team. It looks like he showed up and took the job over. That has to count for something
- eayost

They had two starters at the time and dropped their more successful overager to take him on so it was a bit of a head scratcher at the time. He did grab the bulk of the work and is playing very well in the playoffs. I have high hopes for him. Hopefully we'll correct our AHL team before it's time for him to sign. It's nice we're going on the cheap and letting the Phantoms flounder.

If I was living on my pay as a Downingtown hooker I'd be living under a bridge in the burned out husk of a VW bus. Thankfully Newspapers aren't completely dead yet.

So here is a question, What would you be willing to trade (if anything) to move up in the draft for Seth Jones? Or Second question, what would you give up to move a couple spots up to Guarantee getting Nurse. Do you think either of those players are so much better than the competition that they are worth some other picks or prospects?
- flyler

It would probably be pretty expensive for the Flyers to move from 6-12 up to 1... our 1st, one of our young forward (or two), a high-end prospect (or two). If FLA wins the lottery, I don't think they'd want to move out of the top-3. If COL wins, they're taking Jones. Flyers would probably have to first trade into the top-3 to have a real shot at 1.

I believe the general consensus is for the Flyers to play hard the rest of the way and to win as many games as possible because it's the right thing to do and to build confidence in the kids for next year.

However, give the same general consensus a shot of Sodium Pentothal and I suspect that they would say otherwise.

- 77rams

I have very little experience since the 90s in missing the playoffs I'd have to say that once it appears we're out I will only watch for whatever kids they dress and curiosity. The two times they've missed I've immediately become draft centric. I want to win the cup so once the games mean nothing they mean nothing to me. There's nothing to root for any longer.

I'm glad for the people who can find meaning and enjoy those games. I'd rather drop like a rock but would never expect players to do that so every game is like the lottery. Do I move up or back?

If Stolarz for whatever reason went undrafted last year and was in this year's draft, where would he rank among available goalies?
- eayost

Probably the same place... Flyers kind of reached to get him, and he's playing behind an OHL powerhouse so the numbers are skewed a bit. The early returns on that pick look pretty good... hope it can hold up.

Since 1969 has anyone traded the first pick? I don't remember it happening in the last 25 years.

Regardless of who you pick, aka Seth Jones...there is still a learning curve. We are not the most patient fan base. Plus, as Bill has mentioned several times, it takes some players 2 to 3 years to learn the position.
- phi1671

Jones is being touted as a pretty uncommon prospect... level of readiness and polish is already extraordinarily high for a defenseman. Like Pronger, Doughty, Hedman, Bouwmeester... he's probably going to go straight from the draft to the NHL.

That was how the Flyers were able to draft Mel Bridgman 1st overall in 1975....

Darren Helm, lead all forwards in PK TOI in his rookie year. Not too shabby on FOs.

Corey Emmerton, sophomore, 1:40/game on PK.

Lashoff and DeKeyser, rookies, getting 1:30-2:00/game on PK.

Jonathan Ericsson, 2:00/game on PK in his rookie year.

You might have also heard of guys like Henrique, Fayne, Fraser, Josefson and Stephen Gionta.

That's only recent history, too.

Florida's traded out of the top-pick twice. Once so CBJ could take Nash, and once so PIT could take Fleury. Both times, though, FLA still got the player they wanted @3 (Jbo + Horton).

The other time it happened was when Burke did that ninja poope to get the Sedin twins -- traded up to #1, then traded down to 2 when ATL said they would take Stefan.

Nice - 10 or so pages of Hall vs. Holmstrom for the 4th line center position. Some things never change I guess...

And BTW, the correct answer is Hall, and it shouldn't really even be a debate imo. We've needed Hall or someone like him on the Flyers for a few years now (probably since we lost Betts). If Holmstrom could have filled that role, he'd have had it by now (injury aside). He may one day fill that role, but coming off major knee reconstruction it's probably wise not to put all our eggs in that basket. Re-signing the much more proven Hall at a minimal cap hit seems like a no-brainer.

But enough about that (j/k, I'm sure this will rage on for many more pages)...

I bet Lauridsen is the only guy in the NHL who can say that his first NHL goal was scored by a former Norris Trophy winner putting it past his own goalie. Might be quite a while before that scenario plays out again, if ever. Also, Lauridsen actually has a winning record on the Flyers. They are 8 - 5 with him in the lineup. Maybe he's just the team good luck charm?

Lastly, I think last night's game showed pretty clearly what the problem on this team really is, and it was pretty obvious:

TIMONEN has been dragging us down all year!!! Finally get that guy out of the lineup and we dominated!

You're right. It was traded twice. First it took a the 4th overall and two thirds then it took the 2nd overall and a third.

I forgot Stefan went #1 in 99. What a bust.

The Sedins were the only great players in the top 10 picks.

Since we already tried Oates and that didn't work out too well, Hall seems like the way to go.
