Yeah, but just like the Flyers wouldn't trade Giroux for a couple of less-talented, farther off talents unless there was something forcing their hand (cap issues, locker-room issues, player wants out), St Louis isn't going to dump their #1 dman for a collection of our question marks. Maybe if we had somebody in our system that was comparable to Pietrangelo, there might be a hockey deal there, but we really don't.

True. The only way we could do it would be to find a team deperate for offense and unload a haul (Voracek + Read+) for one. Nashville makes sense, but that ship has sailed.

Giroux for Pietrangelo is the only thing that would strike me as being in the ballpark, but it wouldn't make much sense for either team to pursue that kind of deal.

Giroux isnt going anywhere so enough with that.

If Paul Gaustad can fetch a 1st at last seasons trade deadline... we can still make deals!
Meszaros and Laughton could each fetch nice returns

Sometimes there just isn't a deal to be made. Unfortunately for the Flyers, any move made to acquire a top-flight defenseman will result in an opening of more holes throughout the roster.

Maybe Giroux. After that, the Flyers lack that sexy big-name player. They have good players in guys like Voracek, Timonen, and Simmonds. And they have desirable young players in Schenn and Couturier. But no other marquee names.
- jmatchett383

I guess to the Flyers credit I can only think of a few teams that have more than 1 elite-name player like that.

Hard to find top-flight defenseman on the market these days.

I can't believe anyone is serious enough about moving Giroux or Voracek to actually take the time to type it out.

let me see if I get this straight on a team where offense was just as much of a problem as defense people are suggesting we take the 2 best forwards we have by far , who are both young and dynamic and trade them?

It's not the same as Carter and Richards , who while I loved watching them, neither are in the same caliber offensively as G and V.

I don't see anyone else on this team that is untouchable from a forward perspective. Maybe Simmonds , hell you could make a case for maybe Rinaldo after this season..

Still can't believe NSH did that... they made up for it with the Erat-Forsberg deal, though. Trade deadline is definitely the time to fleece people... during the summer, everybody regains their sanity for the most part.

Meszaros might fetch a young dman in return, but his cap-hit/salary really puts a damper on the number of potential suitors. Has to be a big budget team, with a lot of cap space, desperate for defensive depth. I can't think of anybody off the top of my head that fits that criteria, other than maybe Calgary.

It's a bit too early to be moving Laughton, no?

I was amazed that Mike Milbury was allowed to be GM of the Predators that day.

Those names were only mentioned because we're trying to dispel the myth that St. Louis would accept undeveloped youngsters (Schenn/Read/Couturier) in return for a polished jewel like Pietrangelo.

Well they can continue to polish his jewels, G isn't going anywhere.

He's one of the very few top young defenders that the Flyers might actually have a chance at trading for... if COL manages to draft Jones, it might prompt them to do something with Johnson while he still has trade value.
- Tomahawk

In some ways I think, "We could be the team that turns around Johnsons career, and gets a Norris caliber dman for a bargain" But then in other ways I think "Do we really want to be the team that gets a player on the downslide, being traded just because he "still has some value left""?

Do you think they have what it would take to get one of the next-tier guys, like Goligoski or J. Carlson?

If I were St.Louis it would take Giroux for me to give up Pietrangelo.

I'm not even sure St.Louis would make that deal.

Some part of me wants to just see them draft well, hopefully getting a top 4 d-man in this years draft who will be ready to be a full time NHL'er in 2 seasons. Sign one or two solid NHL caliber dmen this off season who can skate reasonably well. And add a big winger who can check well and contribute some offense.

Take all these pieces and play a defensively sound counterattacking system that can adjust to game situations.

In my world it is up to Lavy to change his style to be more flexible, or get rid of Lavy and bring in a coach who does preach this style of play.

Either way, this run and gun, 3 men in, leave your d-men to play 2 on 5, hang your goalie out to dry system has to go away.

Carlson would still cost more than most of us would be willing to pay, if McPhee didn't cut the call the second Carlson's name was mentioned first.

Golisgoski's stock is down in Dallas (casual defensive play) and they have a number of promising blueline prospects on the verge, but even then the price would be pretty high and I'm not sure the Flyers even have the pieces to make a trade work.

I know Carlson would be damn near impossible to pry away, but GoGo I think could be acquired. He's still RELATIVELY young, and I'd pair him with Schenn as a poor man's Pronger-Carle pairing.

Also, I'd be willing to give a pretty penny for Carlson (and not so much for Alzner). Very underrated, and an American hero.

Edit: Not sure it would do it, but for Carlson, I'd be willing to move some combination of Meszaros, Coburn, Laughton, Read, and picks. Maybe Simmonds if Coburn isn't involved. Probably not enough, but I'd be open to counter proposals.

Would you want to give up one of our young forwards for a Marc-Andre Bergeron type of player who's slated to make $4.6M against the cap, though?

Not sure. I'd have to see a possible deal to see if I'd do it.

I think you GREATLY overestimate Carlsons value. I'd rather just try to keep Mez and help him get his stride back than give all of that.

Here's a few permutations:

1. Simmonds for Goligoski + minor prospect/pick

2. Golisgoski for Read + Gus

3. Goligoski + Dallas' 1st-rounder (12th) for our 1st-rounder (8th) + Laughton

Drafting, drafting, drafting.

Is the way teams, and good defensive cores are made in the new NHL.

The Flyers are being taught this the hard way.
