The Flyers are the worst 5-on-5 team in the NHL. No surprise that, just about the entire team has a negative plus/minus rating. |

i actually like our d better with oliver, gusty and manning then coburn, mezzy and gervais, id like to see them stick next year and gain more exp, its a nice trio, i can already see oliver getting better each game - mydoglicks
i agree oliver may be young and make mistakes but he's much more interesting to watch develop than other players gusty looks like he'll be smart player
haven't seen enough of manning to get a feel for him |

Ollie has quickly become my favorite player.
Though it remains to be seen if he will ever be a permanent fixture on the blueline, his approach to each game is refreshing. He comes to play every game, is aggressive, stands up for his teammates, looks as if he truly wants to be here, and is making himself noticed by other players by trying to be difficult to play against.
Since the season went in the hopper, this is what I wanted the team to do - bring up the youngsters and give them a taste of the big time. See how they handle themselves.
Though Ollie definitely needs a little more instruction and experience, at least I can see the desire to succeed. |

Safe to say, not very much. He's going to be a career AHLer. There are little things that Lauridsen does that make you think this guy def. has a future in this league. Hes 24 yoa and in my opinion the way hes playing right now there's reason to believe that sending him down (next year) won't do anything for him. He does not look out of place on the 3rd pairing, (not that much on the 2nd pairing at that). If Mez can ever get healthy that would be an interesting 3rd pairing |

I enjoyed him as well, but I recall Bill saying that people were way overvaluing him and what he can do as a player. He hasn't been in the NHL since then, so I'm guessing it wasn't just the Flyers who felt the same way about him.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching young players, but I think part of that comes more from they are more of an unknown, and have little if any expectations they have to meet. See Couturier last year, Mason now, Oliver, etc. To me, at least, in a poopty season, anything new that doesn't immediately suck is a good thing, but reality usually sets in sooner or later. |

Of course they were overvaluing him, they went out and bought his jersey for crying out loud!

You're probably right.
Just for grins, I checked out hockey db to see what Lasse's been up to....
His KHL numbers look, on the surface, to be respectable. However, he's carrying a big, fat -16 in the SEL this year ( http://www.hockeydb.com/i...ts/pdisplay.php?pid=56047). |

Agreed. People fall in love fast in this town... and out of love faster when someone screws up.
I like seeing the kids do well but I would not bench a healthy Meszaros or Coburn for Ollie or Gus... I do feel Gus should stick and has well outplayed Gervais. |

I think you are all reading a little too much into this.
Nobody is saying players like Ollie are the answers, just that it's fun to watch a kid who looks hungry and who competes every game.
Someone takes liberties with a Flyer while Ollie's on the ice and he steps up and takes the aggressor on. Someone pushes and he pushes back. Responses like that aren't seen often enough lately.
And what exactly is a "healthy Mezaros" you speak of? |

I think Ollie's determination alone should get him a good chance at a roster spot next year. I'd rather have a team of players that want to work than a team of players that just want to coast on their talents. I'm really liking Ollie the more i see of him despite his short comings, but I feel his short comings can be fixed by a good coach. |

Far from it. He was a little undersized to be the type of defenseman he was at the NHL level -basically a miniature Grossmann -- but he did the job well. Always liked him for his heart and his savvy. |

He was a two-time All-Star in the KHL.
The team he played for in Sweden this year was one of the worst teams that has played in Elitserien in the last 20+ years -- to the point that it was almost a foregone conclusion that they'd be relegated, because there were Allsvenskan (minor league) clubs that were clearly better. The fact that Kukkonen was-16 and not -32 or some such was actually a testament to the fact that he was one his team's few competent players, especially because he was assigned the shutdown D role on the top pair.

Because he was undersized for his role and not the fleetest afoot. Didn't mean he wasn't effective.
