The Wings have been held up as the God model of an organization for about 234678 years now and I am a little sick of it.
They got lucky and drafted one of the best Dmen of all time, who played his whole career there, and they got very lucky with some draft picks that turned out to be superstars.
They have not been able to maintain that, because it wasn't *all* about how brilliant they were. A lot of their success, ANY team's success, is luck. - Aetherial
I agree with this but the Wings had a long drought prior to getting Yzerman, Lidstrom, et al so I was glad they had a good run at the top of the heap. Prior to that the organization had traded away a lot of their good young talent (Marcel Dionne, Garry Unger, Dale McCourt, etc).
Maybe nobody watched? I know after Washington's second goal that this was gonna be one of those nights, so I turned it off. - Aetherial
I didn't watch, I knew they were going to lose it(back to back, rusty goalie, team was slow night before, Washington's hot) so I went to Jurassic Park.

good names I am not sure I would put McCourt in the same list as Unger or Dionne

they were way ahead of the curve when it came to euro scouting
thats why they were drafting superstars in the middle rounds.. because nobody else knew about them
the other teams have caught up now is all.
but it wasnt luck.. it was forsight by their management. so i got to give props - Dozzer
Actually it was the Leafs who were ahead of the curve. Back in the 70's they brought in the two Swedes, when nobody even knew Europe existed.
Their problem was that Gregory left, and it was 10 years of mediocrity that ensued. They pioneered the european players, then abandoned that fertile ground.

Don't agree the Leafs have been drafting Euros for years... they got lucky.. with Zetterburg etc...
They also developed them well.. by mixing them on top lines with veterans.. Quinn used to play them off of the rock.. with Domi & Belak.. and when Domi would make a mistake the kid would get benched and be sent back down to the minors. - DoctorNHL
people have drafted euros.. but it was the wings who really put a full scouting compliment there first..
before it was hit and miss.. not a lot of time and effort was dedicated to it
trust me, the wings were the leaders in this area,... big time

gah, not in the mood to argue today
i never once said teams didnt draft euros prior to the wings
i said the wings were the first to make it a priority and put a full time scouting compliment in europe

to think anything different....you would only be kidding yourself.
i do not like the wings, not 1 bit...but they are a first class organization and they also started the euro trend. 100%.
