That said, if the brass intend to buy out, say, Briere, should they play him the rest of the way, or use the opportunity to take a look at a younger player?
- 77rams

It would be completely disrespectful and classless to make a guy like Briere sit if he's healthy after the way he's conducted himself off and on the ice during his time here. It's only a few more games, he's earned the right to end his stay here on the ice.

Do you play Mason from now on knowing what you have in Breeze?
- 77rams

I'd like to see Mason, although I'm not sure how much you'll gain with the rest of the team around him.

Do you give younger players on the team bigger roles to see if they can handle them - move Coots up to 2nd line center, BSchenn? Let up on Timo's throttle (he has to last another entire year after all) and give more minutes to Ollie?
- 77rams

Again, not sure how much you can gauge a player's progress at this point, but I'm not opposed to at least giving the young guys a taste of higher workloads.

New Pronger article (plus video), a teaser for the 4/22/13 piece in Sport Illustrated, on SI.com:

http://sportsillustrated....post-concussion-symptoms/

Excerpt:
"It is a sad way for a great and likely Hall of Fame career to end, but to Pronger's credit, he also spoke thoughtfully and forcefully about the future, even one with such uncertainty because everything from his vision to his train of thought may never quite return to normal. He talked about what constituted a victory, or what he called "a winning streak:" consecutive days without strong headaches and symptoms. He's been pushing himself to work out, move around and be with people more in order to improve the quality of his life and reduce the stress on his family, even if that means aggravating his symptoms more often than he would like. "

"Pronger was so effective on the ice in part because he fought against, battled with, stared down and out-yapped just about any foe who ever challenged him. This battle is different. It is taking longer than he expected and producing fewer good results. It was an odd feeling trying to sit closer and speak to him more softly in an already quiet and empty locker room at the Flyers' practice facility in Vorhees, NJ. For so many years he enjoyed razzing reporters during his entertaining postgame banter that your first instinct was to stand back a step so as not to be sliced up by a verbal zinger. As thoughtful as he was during our talk, Pronger still had a zinger or two waiting at the end of the magazine interview, and that glimmer of mischief, more than any medical assessment, was enough to show how far he's come and how steeled he is for his ongoing battle."

i don't want to see them play soft but losses don't sting as much. having said that, if it's the Rangers, Devils, Pens, Habs or Bruins I want them to win. And losing to those teams sucks.

the Flyers lose a pick if they re-sign him? was that a condition on the trade?

They would have to give up their 7th if he's resigned by them prior to October 1st (I think that's the date).

Then why play him on wing? And why not on the first pp unit?

The more he plays in the way he is playing now on Schenn's line, the more inept he looks. And the more the danger to his future. I am not sure he is not actually driving down his value by playing.

If he wants to play, the Flyers will play him where they feel he can best contribute to the team. It's one thing to allow him to play and another to slot him at a place you don't feel he's suited to play (i.e. playing Shelley as your 1st line center as a thank you). If they feel he best benefits the team playing the wing, they'll play him on the wing.

Do they really owe Danny anything other than a paycheck? Would it be any less classless or disrespectful than buying him out right after the seasons over?

I'd like to see Mason get as many shots under adverse conditions that he can get. It would be harder to gauge him if he played in front of a solid D than a porous one.

You are contradicting yourself. Either its what is best for him or what is the best for the team. What is best for the team at this stage is clearly for him to sit given risk of injury. What is best for him is to play in the position he has played the most in his career and where he has excelled.

Taking the middle ground is just muddling matters.

I don't think it's disrespectful to buy him out. Disrespectful would be telling him that, even though you're paying him, you're not going to let him play 2 weeks before you are going to make him find a new job.
Briere has gone above and beyond his duties off the ice. He's at every charity event he can make it to, he's let rookies stay with him, and he's great with fans. There are guys like Briere, Knuble, and Shelley who, to me, have earned the right to end their careers/Flyer careers with dignity, not as being healthy scratches. That's why I've been advocating dressing Shelley and Knuble for the final game, barring it having any playoff implications for the Flyers.

I'm saying he should be able to play (to me, he has earned the right) but at the same time, it doesn't mean they have to make him the 1st line center and play him 40 minutes a night. Sorry if I didn't convey that well.

I realize that the wins are hurting the Flyers chances of ending up with a higher pick, but it's good to see the young players stepping up and refusing to die quietly. That seemed to be a danger after the previous four losses, where the Flyers couldn't generate much of an attack or even sustained pressure.

If this year's class was like the Kane-JvR-Turris class, the wins would be a bigger issue. As it is, the Flyers are almost certain to get a very solid prospect, regardless of where they pick.

The core group is young enough that it can use a late season run of success to build off of for next season.

It "does" hurt but the depth of this draft will still yield a solid prospect no matter the slot then end up with

I found him. Took more time than I thought. He's with Spartak still and played 11 games in the KHL.

Yeah I saw that. What was it, 1 A and a -4? Was he the player we took over Hyka?

Edit: He did score his team's only goal in their 1-0 win to qualify for the KHL playoffs.

No. Hyka went earlier in the 6th. We took him in the 7th, that's why I brought him up. We took Reece Wilcox with Hyka on the board in the 5th.

Okayl I knew he was in the 7th, I just didn't remember where Hyka went (other than it was the pick we sent to LA).
Still can't figure out the Mathers pick in the 7th when we could have taken Hyka in 2011.
