On what are you basing this opinion?

I don't think anybody here disputes that the "leader" of this team is JT and that when Streit is no longer an Islander, the "C" goes on JT's sweater. I nor others on this site would want it any other way. This discussion is about our disagreement as to the adequacy of Streit's captaincy. You and I fundamentally disagree on that. Neither one of us is really in a position to truly know what type of captain or how good a captain Streit is.

- Jethro09

I told you what I was basing it on. I also told you that it was all speculation. I don't blame you if you disagree, but I do think this management has shown in the past that they are very careful about having 'leaders' who tote the company line and Streit, at the time being a less established player, was a non threatening choice. Again, all speculation.
The core of this dispute is based on how important Streit's Captaincy is to this team. While I am okay that we kept him for the playoff run, I don't think he's so strong of a Captain that losing that aspect of his role here would have been that insurmountable. I would have been more concerned with the loss of depth.

Comeau was in pretty high demand the year before.. and Snow held on to him & dumped him the next season.

Snow resigned him for one year. It was a 'do it again' contract that would have earned him a longer deal (he's done that with other players). That one year contract was the smartest thing he could have done, thank God we didn't get locked into 3-4 years with that bum. We weren't in a position to start dealing 20 goal scorers so we were hopeful he'd establish himself as a true sniper...he failed and suddenly no one wanted him. hindsight..20/20...etc etc. The fact was we had hoped he would hang around as a productive player.

in a heartbeat, but again its being assumed that trading Streit would have ment no playoffs... I dont buy that.

You have to look past just the player himself and also consider the effect that trading him may have on the players still on the team. At the time of the deadline the Islanders were on the outside of the playoffs. The message sent by trading the captain and arguably one of the 3 or 4 best players on the team over the last few years certainly would not have been a positive one and would have been a signal to the others that management was giving up on the season. If you're telling me that under those circumstances this team would still have made the playoffs, well I don't buy that.

now it's a late second round pick? Can I hear a third? Anyone? Anyone? Jk
- Cptmjl

Of course it was late. Who's trading for him? Florida? Colorado? No, it would have been Pittsburgh, or Boston or Montreal. By virtue of the standings those team would only have late round picks to offer.

Thats fine to feel that way.. But trading him away for whatever help/picks/prospects & then putting the C on JT, could have had a positive effect on the team as well. In fact JT might not be in the funk he's in now after slapping the C on his chest.

Of the d-men at Bridgeport at the time of the deadline, who was a viable replacement?

How? By putting more weight on his shoulders? I also wouldn't discount how much better this team has played since the deadline.

How so? You dont think the C on his chest could light a fire under his @ss and his team mates? That is an impossible possibility?
