This is exactly what some people don't get. Making the playoffs for the first time in six seasons is far more valuable to this team right now than another second round pick (or worse). The popular retort seems to be that "nobody can guarantee the Isles wouldn't make the playoffs without Streit", but those same people conveniently omit the fact that the team's chances of making the playoffs this season are better with Streit than without.
- Jethro09

I dont omit it, and I dont disagree with it.. I just dont think the team is dead in the water without him.

Again, I'm just happy they're winning but if anyone thinks this team would be dead in the water without Streit they need to pay attention to his playing a little more closely. Admittadely he has been a little better as of late.

He WANTS $5.5M per. Do you really think he's going to get that? He'll get around what Vis got, probably the same term too. And he'll get that offer before July 1. I think (I don't know) that if he gets an offer similar to Vis', he'll sign it.

on the FA market.. Yep!

absolutely agree with you on this one. Someone will be willing to overpay. If we all thought Streits contract demands bfr the trade deadline were ludicrous we have'nt seen anything yet. We make the playoffs do well or God forbid win a round the guy is going to be asking for the moon and stars and you can bet your a$$ someone will be willing to pay it.

in a heartbeat, but again its being assumed that trading Streit would have ment no playoffs... I dont buy that.

Never thought I'd hear the NHL Network talk about a "big Eastern Conference matchup tonight" with the two teams being the Isles and Leafs!

Then fine. Let him walk. And if the team makes the playoffs this season it will still be worth it that they didn't move him for a late second round pick (or worse). They'll go into next summer with enough $$ to sign his replacement, who may even be an upgrade.

if thats the case, i hope its not the islanders...the cap is going down, teams are going to have to make space on their rosters...id rather the islanders spend their money on players with upside instead of overpaying and chasing returns

Seriously I could care less if STreit is here or not next year he is getting older and has lost a step. I do feel there was no better options and that is why he did not get traded at the trade deadline.

Also Boyes more than likely will not be back. I dont think anyone in the organization is really that impressed with him. I think they would have talked extension by now.

Finally big game tonight against the Leafs. It will be a tough one though so we better be ready

"I" dont have any d-men in bridgeport, isles do.

i just dont think the gap between streit and one of 8 dmen in the ahl is that close to say wed be in the same spot we are today...and i wouldnt risk this spot for a 2nd round pick.

i guess thats what it boils down to at the end of the day...

absolutely agree with you. Unfortunately this is the situation that was created with not signing him or not trading him. I understand everyone's point on this one and don't really think anyone is clear cut wrong. Well just have to see how it plays out but you really can't be overly pissed one way or the other.

End of the day JT and MM need to play better. No matter who is on the wing...I think MM is hurt and I really feel JT is getting caught up in the goals race, even though he should never admit it. He is gripping the stick a bit and is really showing frustration out there. Not saying he shouldn't be but in the end he is still very young and growing as a professional.
I still think he will only get better and better the next couple of seasons. But right now I'm hoping he has his best 5 games of the season starting tonight.

Could have been a third, who knows? It likely would have been a contender offering to trade for Streit. Something tells me that it wasn't Florida or Colorado calling and inquiring about Streit's availability. Contenders tend to have late round picks. I sincerely doubt a first was offered for Streit so late second round pick sounds about right.

You are saying I'm "minimizing" the importance of a captain. I never said that. I'm saying that you don't have to have a big mouth and be animated to be a good captain. I've said repeatedly that I've heard or read nothing to indicate that Streit is a bad captain. You are interpreting soft spoken and reserved as quiet and weak. Just because Streit isn't animated and yelling on camera every chance he gets doesn't mean he's a bad captain or that he doesn't get his message across.

When you say "the player representative", do you mean their representative to management? If so, explain to me why its necessary that the "player representative" be animated and loud? And you're assumption that JT will be a better captain is based upon what? That he's a better player? You may be right, but you don't have the information at your disposal to make such a claim, unless you are some team insider.

- Jethro09

Streit is a self admitted, quiet lead by example type of guy. On teams of veterns that tends to work. On younger teams I'd prefer to have someone capable of lighting a fire. So from a lockeroom perspective, with a team like this, I'd prefer to have a Messier type guy over a Lidstrom.

From a team representative position, I think Streit is more of a company guy, partly because he was given the Captaincy despite probably not being Captain material at that time. I think we've seen from coaching choices and firings in the past that this management/ownership prefers the path of least resistance when it comes to inhouse leaders. That makes Streit a popular choice for them, whereas a guy like Tavares who clearly demands excellence of himself may be a bit more demanding of even ownership and management.

I realize this is all opinion based on little factual evidence so it's more just fodder for us to throw around. That said, if we're choosing a Captain right now, I think the guy who leads best by example AND by attitude is Tavares and Streit isn't even close in either category. Though somehow I doubt Garth is going to read this and say "Hmmmm, he's right!" as he personally sews the C on Tavares jersey.

No one does so if your argument is, "well we would've only gotten a 2nd for him" then it's really not the most valid argument. Not that there are too many valid arguments on hockeybuzz

disagree...i think he is compensating for the other 2 slackers on his line and trying to do too much whenever he gets the puck... he doesnt trust MM or boyes right now.

Oh yeah. that's right. Lets replace Streit in a playoff push with Wishart. I'm sure Donovan would certainly be on par with Streit. Maybe even Ness could have simply stepped in and adequately filled Streit's skates.

All im saying is that Snow is the worst at getting value for he assets... Could have traded Comeau while his value was high, waited a season to late & had him claimed on waivers. Teams were interested in Konopka, even thou there was no intention to resign him, let him walk. PAP, Nabby (thankfully that ended well) & now Streit. I know there are other examples... For a rebuilding team & make the playoffs or not.. this team is still rebuilding... losing building blocks for nada is not the way to go. The more picks you have the more choices you have to deal them to move up or nab a player in trade. The more picks you make, the better your odds of that draft netting future NHL players.

We are in NVMC for 2 more seasons, we aren't adding payroll for at least 2 more years....im just saying
