@markhmasters: Leafs coach Randy Carlyle will meet with reporters at Verizon Center at 5 pm; update on Lupul's status for tonight expected at that time

Well I take what Dreger says with regards to Nonis with a grain of salt.

No one hear knows exactly what happened.. and will probably never know. There was already conflicting reports of what was asked.. or proposed and by whom.

Lets just say for now.. YOU "think" he will get nothing in return and I "think" he will get some sort of return.. although nothing spectacular. And we can leave it at that.

- kneughter

Well of course he will get "some sort of return"...a 6th and a used jock is "some sort of return".

Luongo isn't garbage... he is still a top tier goalie in this league. His cap hit is fantastic.. its the length of the contract that sucks.

So Luongo isn't "crap".. he isn't "overpaid"... the worst part about him you didn't even mention.

- kneughter

I know you said you want to move off this topic, but hey, I'm still catching up (stupid meetings), so here goes:

Canucks fans have got to quit with this line of reasoning.

It's like saying the firing squad isn't so bad, because you aren't getting your head chopped off, and you aren't being electrocuted.

For eff's sakes, you had the poor bastard in tears at a press conference (what were they thinking putting him out there in front of the mics 10 seconds after 3 pm?), admitting that his contract made him unmovable.

Quit listing the 7 things about him that are still terrific, because they are all moot points: nobody wants to pay a guy until he is 43 years old. Nobody wants to have that cap hit for the last 3-6 years of his contract.

Gillis is going to have to put on his big boy pants, apologize to Luongo, and then put him on waivers. And then, if he can't find a sucker to take him, he's going to have to start going through his rolodex, asking GMs how much salary the Canucks would have to eat to get Luongo out of Vancouver.

Sorry, but there it is.

If you don't like it, I'd be happy to discuss how Komisarek still has trade value. Veteran d-man, former all-star, good presence in the dressing room...

I'm saying it right now - If Leafs win tonight, they're gonna run the table through the remaining 5 games.

Vancouver's not getting out of the first round... not sure what you're smoking there Match-up with St Louis doesn't favour Van.

- Big_Lightnin

I actually think it does... Van has played great against St louis so far this year.. and St louis goaltending has been as inconsistent as it comes. Most fans you talk to here are not at all confident going into these playoffs.

I think Minny and St louis are vancouvers best matchup. LA and San jose being their worst.

I saw what San Jose with capable goaltending did to Van this year.. its obviously a small sample size. We will see

I'm more confident this year than I was last year... no Daniel Sedin last year.. and no real 3rd line. This year.. everyone will hopefully be healthy (not including Booth) and finally have a real 3rd line potential.

I agree, Nabokov isn't a playoff performer and the Isles will need strong goaltending.

Washington is a tough nut to crack. Last year they rode Holtby (sp) into the second round - beating the Bruins in the process - and nearly taking out the Rangers.

Ottawa would be a more solid contender with a full line-up.

Boston is scary. I'm sure they're beatable - they are - but Toronto seems to going into a shell.

Montreal can go either way. We may have dusted them, but the playoffs = blank slate.

- A_Tree

Montreal makes me more nervous than Boston. They're just so (frank)ing annoying and they won't go away.

I just have zero expectations against Boston. If we could get home ice advantage over them, all the better.

"He won't be playing unless he's 110%"

Fantastic.

If he's ready, it would provide some great energy for the club, especially after playing last night too.

You've also got to wonder about a "top-tier" goaltender, who isn't in the top-20 of save%.

It was titled "Perfect scenario" .....you wouldn't want to watch the Leafs beat the Sens, Habs, and Nucks on route to the Cup? Yes you would! Then we all dive into the vat of Crown and die.

Fair enough.. wasn't Komi voted in by fans? And thats one all star game. We have a goalie who has been a vezina finalist 3 times (almost 4).. and brought his team to game 7 of SCF with the lowest scoring team in post-expansion history. So although I see your point.. it wasn't the best example to compare.

I'm not delusional... but its not like Gillis has been trying to move Luongo for 3 years. He has actively tried to move him for maybe 1 season.. not even. So lets give him a little more time before we decide that he is unmoveable.

The leafs beat the habs. We know that much for a fact. The bruins evoke scary thoughts. What you can expect is a four game sweep - maybe we steal a win. Based on our recent history with that team, we're in for a rough ride if we have to play them

And once again, you don't seem to get it: I don't give foo tucks what Luongo did two years ago.

Nobody wants to bring a guy on board who will jam up your salary cap for 3-6 years. You 'nucks fans seem to have a learning disability when it comes to grasping this simple concept.

I don't care about yesterday. Focus on how badly he will eff up a team tomorrow.

Get it?

Gillis is toast. I do think they're keeping him around at this point to do exactly as you suggest.

He's going to do the dirty work, swallow his pride, then go down with the ship. They don't want the new guy they hire to be the one who deals with the Luongo mess.

Right.. but his numbers are pretty solid right NOW.. so I don't quite understand what you're saying.

The problem isn't what he will do tomorrow.. its what he will do 4-5 years from now that makes him difficult to move. Its quite apparent to most people that having him on your team for the next 3-4 years at his cap hit will be fine. Its the 4 years after that where he is barely a back up still taking up 5.3 million

The question is whether or not you can find somebody willing to take the hit on 9 years of remaining contract for 3 years of productive play.

The answer is no.

Wow, good point.

Oh, wait: that's what I said in my last two posts.

And also please keep in mind, having him on your team for the next 3-4 years and being OK with the salary cap hit won't neccessarily be fine.

He's on a downward trend at the moment.

You know, losing his starting job and all...
