Idk, lots of people in this city (fans and media) think Kane is the best on the team. That's so far off its unbelievable

Reasonable for sure Al

Just looking at Orr's career stats...one year he was +124 and 3 other years he was +80 or better...WOW !

- philco28

The year Orr was +124, the Hawks had a Dman who was +51...

Some of the numbers seem inflated...like Gretzky's assist totals.

Orr played at the beginning of the expansion era, for an original 6 team - lst of lopsided scores against expansion teams for several years would inflate some stats, like +/- .

CCM tacks were the dominant skate of the era when Orr played. They were made of kangaroo leather which is softer and stretches more than cowhide. Buy them as tight as you can stand them and they would break in to the form of your foot. A lot of hockey players at all levels would wear those skates barefoot. And when you would get them just right you could have a shoemaker put stitching in the sides and make them more stiff and give more support. Common practice back in the day. Some guys would even put them on and step into a bucket of water and then go skate to break them in.

Can go you one better than the story, 6628 --

Still have my original TACKS with Kangaroo leather -- hanging up by the blades in my Dad's basement.

Also have my SuperTACKS, those as well are hanging up in my Dad's basement. Those had the Kangaroo leather inside but was one of the 1st that had the nylon exterior, were quite a bit stiffer than the original TACKS.

Both pairs you had to replace the entire blade assembly, none of this plastic holder with separate blade stuff. And man those were really heavy compared to today's skates. However, there was NOTHING that felt like those original TACKS.

one more thing -- they also picked up quite a bit of weight from the water absorbed, so by the end of a game, they felt like lead weights.

There has never been a playing machine like Gretzky for manufacturing points. Before the NHL:

- 16 years old rookie Junior A in the Soo - 70 Goals, 112 Assists

- 14 years old rookie Junior B in Toronto - 28 games, 70 points

- 10 years old in Brantford - one season 378 Goals, 139 assists. Parents of other kids hated him, wanted him kicked out of the league.

- By age of 13, had scored more than 1000 goals in minor hockey.

It was a different era then but Wayner learned early how to put the puck in the net.

Can't take anything away from Gretzky but his era featured a lot of scoring.

Another Brantford boy scored 155 points in 60 games in the O in 88-89 season.Would have loved to seen what Brian Fogerty could have done without the substance abuse.Very sad story, that guy broke Orrs' records and flamed out young.

Respectfully disagree .

Niemi is > than Crawford but this team has been missing the Ladd / Big Buff type of player in the last 2 playoffs more than a goalie upgrade.

Hopefully the 2013 team speed and slight replenishments of toughness/skill types like Shaw , the resurgence of Hammer are the difference between this seasons teams and the last 2 seasons.

Lots of stories about Wayne's minor hockey career. A golf buddy of mine from Brantford who is still a close friend of Wayne's told me one which is fairly common knowledge around Southern Ontario.

The friend is 13 at the time and playing for a Brantford minor team in a big bantam tournament in London, Ontario. They make it to the tournament championship game against the London team. Gretzky is 11 years old and playing elsewhere in a different tournament that weekend as a pee wee.

2 hours before the bantam game, the Brantford coach calls Walter Gretzky and asks him if he could get Wayne to London in time to play for the bantam team in the final game. Walter gets him there late in the 2nd period and the team is losing 1-0. Wayne was already dressed coming from his other tournament, puts his skates on and goes out for the 3rd period. Scores 3 goals by himself in the 3rd period and Brantford wins 3-1.

People are welcome to disagree but just in watching this Bruins game, there is no way that the B's are able to stay with our skaters if we see them in the finals... they have very few skaters who can skate with us and they play a very rugged game like much of the Eastern Conference. Needless to say, should the Hawks reach the finals, I LOVE our chances

Agreed....a friend of mine played with Fogarty in Kingston and I had a chance to meet him 20 years ago. He was the NICEST guy. Tragic.

Yep.....And some were hooked and still were lucky to have a good career and make dough.....Sanderson comes to mind but he wound up broke and almost dead.
