He played great in Union's conference and NCAA playoffs. In the one game I saw (televised on ESPNU), the analyst - I think it was Melrose - was fawning all over him. Made several comments like "The Flyers got themselves a good one in this kid".

Now, how much you value Melrose's opinion is up for debate I suppose, but Ghost had a great playoffs, and the cut in his minutes on the US team was due to a suspension for a hit (see - he's the PERFECT Flyer!), not due to his play.

I'm actually not that sold yet on Lauridson. Maybe someday? But I won't cry if he gets sent back down. I find I hold my breath when he's on the ice. I think Huskins has done a better job. And Gus has gained a lot of confidence out there. He's far from perfect but I'd be ok with Lauridson waiting till next season to get more ice time.
And yeah I hope they do play Mason in net as I'd like to see if we can trust him before we throw him to the wolves. But I seriously doubt they do. I bet it's gonna be Bryz until next week and then we might see him during our back to back (not that Montreal and NY Rangers aren't scary).

- FlyersGrace

There's no better time than now for Lauridsen to get his feet wet in the NHL, though. The Flyers aren't jumping over four teams in 10 games to get a playoff spot. I'd rather hold my breath now than in games that count. He's getting a taste of the speed and power of the NHL game. Not a bad thing.

Even if Bob wins the Vezina in this shortened season, let's wait and see how he does after this year and compare his career to Mason's career before we close the book on either.

Didn't you hear? Ben Bishop was awarded the Vezina last night.

I think he has greater potential than Boosh or Leights as he's only 24 and has played better in the past. But currently he's still been all over the map as far as consistancy. I think the upgrade and chance to grow and get his game back is worth the Pick and losing Leighton is just icing on the cake. But it's hard to think of this deal as a win when the last goalie deal we made with Columbus invovling a backup has landed that Goalie as the frontrunner for this year's Vezina (Bob).

Do you honestly beleive that Bobrovsky is the front runner for the Vezina?

Not surprised at the Mason extension. There was little chance he was getting north of $2mm in AAV.

Thankfully, it was revoked. Or has the award changed names to, "Vezina of the Day?"

Congrats to the Flyers on re-signing Mason for a 1 yr/1.5 mill deal. That all but guarantees that both Bryz and Mason will be here next year and that Mason will be the backup.

Apparently Mason and his agent both think there wasn't a good market for him after 4 horrendous years as a starter (even after the much ballyhooed Calder season everyone keeps talking about).

I didn't think the Flyers would be able to get him to sign such a huge paycut.

No chance that Pronger get's bought out. And Briere is going to be very difficult to trade. And the trade deadline has already passed.
- MJL

I don't think they are going to trade him now.... and I don't think it's going to be as difficult as everyone thinks to move Briere. Remember the Islanders just traded valueable assets for Tim Thomas's empty contract just to hit the cap floor. A guy like Briere who can still play at a high level with a contract that has a bigger cap hit than his actually salary is going to look like a steak dinner to some teams trying to make the floor. And that's IF we wanted to move him, and if he wanted to be moved.

With his second suspension so far this year, do you think he might be branded, kind of like Downie (although Downie didn't do himself any favors in that preseason game)? He definitely has 3rd line (possibly more) potential, but I'd hate for him to be a liability out there due to his reputation.
- jmatchett383

He doesn't really have that rep, though, even with the latest incident. Downie (and Zac Rinaldo's) main jobs even before the NHL were to stir things up. Laughton has a hard-nosed rep but is thought of more as a shutdown center than someone who goes looking to cause trouble.

I'm guessing that deal was unofficially done before the trade was even consummated.

Me either. I am wondering about the 1 yr. Since he will still be an RFA is this a good contract for him or the Flyers? Would a 2 yr have been better for him?

The cap hit is as low as I could have hoped for. Really happy with this situation- of course Mason needs to work hard and show up for it to matter in the end.

Exactly. Qualifying him at his current salary was a non-option and he was going to take a pay cut wherever he went. A one-year deal at a cap-friendly figure gives him a chance to re-establish himself without having to worry about getting signed this summer AND leaves the door open to a raise in 2014-15 and beyond if he has a strong season. The deal made sense for him as well as the Flyers.

Buccigross said he needs another year of college though for physical maturity before going pro. He looked great in that ESPNU game. But the next game was made invisible. Love him, but he is skinnnny.

Funny... probably the best thing that ever happened to Stamkos.
- jak521

yeah. They put him on a serious conditioning regimen to make him stronger and keep him healthier in the rigors of the NHL game.

Almost certainly guarantees another year here for Bryzgalov, too. It'd be nice if both guys can kind of push one another.
