Come on, going to need another option besides Mason when they buyout Briere and Bryz. It's a done deal if they don't make a run in the playoffs, let alone get there.

Jones is much more polished with a (likely) higher offensive upside.

as i've said before, i think it's way too soon to know what will happen. could they buy him out? sure. if i were a betting man, which i'm not, but if i were, i would bet they keep him for this coming season and let mason push each other. they could still buy him out after next season.

bryz's play has dropped some, but he's had virtually no rest, and little support with a revolving cast of dmen, many of which are fringe quality or very young. i'd like to see him with a relatively healthy team and a committed defensive style of play before we cut him loose.

to pin their playoffs on him is misguided. but that's not a surprise if that's what happens, because the flyers have shown again and again, they don't know what the (frank) they're doing with goalies.

i understand that everyone wants the last line of defense to be impenetrable regardless of the circumstances. it's just not very realistic. bryz has shown himself to be very capable and a quality #1 goalie. i just don't understand the rationale that if he doesn't save the season by himself despite the circus around him that he's the problem. then they look at the contract. he can be moved, and odds are he won't be here for more than half of the term. the cap will continue to go up, and his cap hit will take up less and less of the available space. this is not a cup caliber team right now, even with the best goalie in the league (whoever the (frank) that is). can we have a goalie for more than 2 (frank)ing years without running him out of town and deciding he's not the one?

i'm happy with the mason acquisition. i like his upside and the contract. it's a good gamble. maybe he and bryz can push and support each other and we'll have a great tandem. wouldn't that be nice?

Again with the rational thought! Stop it!

I think it's just too easy for most folks to fall back on the "goalie controversy in Philly again/still" dead horse and call it their "analysis."

Now that he's signed for cheap and short, I don't mind it. I'm not holding out a lot of hope, but I do have an open mind about it. However, I will be really disappointed if the organization uses him to push Bryz out the door without giving him the chance he deserves with a better team in front of him.

I don't know what's going to happen. A buyout of Briere is one thing. They got value out of that contract and it's not a big deal. But think about it. Are the bean counters at Comcast just going to let the Flyers walk away from Bryzgalov, and write that big check? I think odds are the word from upstairs is you signed him, now make it work, and give it another year. I could very well be wrong, but that's what my gut tells me.

I think you're right, I think he gets another year. I obviously am only shooting in the dark too. Mason as a cheap backup sure does make paying Bryz's contract easier to swallow for next season. I just couldn't believe that horrible contract when it was handed out in the first place.

Briere is toast either way. Too bad, classy guy.

Now that Mason signed an extension for 1yr 1.5M it makes sense, I think the Flyers give Bryzgalov one more season to prove his worth. The team has had alot of injuries so lets fix some of the holes and get back healthy players than decide after next year whether to keep him or buy his contract out.

I'm looking at options before I'd buy him out. In the end I do thinkg he'll get bought out if Flyers management can admit the salary is not equal to performance the last 2 years. The value in buying him out early isn't $$$, it's getting another goalie with potential on a short term deal. $5,6667 per year for 5 more is not acceptable.

Buying him out for the final five years would cost the Flyers $25.25M

Thats alot of money to eat but then again this franchise has the $.

I think they allow it. The fact that its paid over the next 14 years will soften the blow. They won't like it but I think they justify it.
