No better options out there, Backstrom isn't going to sign here he'll get a big money retirement deal and he's the only guy on the market better. Chad Johnson and Labs are backups at best and Visentin/Lee/Domingue the top-3 goalie prospects are still a few years away.
Unless they make a trade for a goalie that's better than Smith, I don't see how they can't sign him. Anything over 3 years though and I think it would be a mistake. I really hate long deals on goalies since even the best in the world have ups and downs.

Forget where I read it, but isn't Smith asking for something in the neighborhood of $7 million/season long term? Gotta figure that would be a deal breaker for a budget team like PHX.
Agreed on the young guys and Johnson/Labarbara—few years away for the youngsters, and as big a fan of Labarbara as I am, he's never going to be more than a solid backup. |

Adam, I think he has developed into a very temperamental emotional player and teams see this and mess with his head by getting a little closer or ice-spray showering and the like.
I think the general consensus outside of Phoenix is that he has lost confidence in the organization, not the other way around.
Any other goalie would be lauded and protected and SIGNED... |
