Great post.

It's not whether or not Bryz sucks. He's mediocre to slightly above. Bottom line is he's nowhere near worth his cap hit and the number of years left on his contract. He is also not the first goalie to play in front of a bad defensive team. Goalies have put up some great stats in front of worse teams.

If Bryz were a true 'elite' goalie like Miller or Lundquist, I'd have no issue with his contract. The problem is he hasn't shown on the whole to be any better than what we've had in net the past 10 years. That cap space can be better spent on other pieces.

This is the most accurate characterization of his play. There is no denigration of his play and no unwarranted adulation (i could get into why his play is inconsistent but perhaps in a later post). It is rather simple. Its about his cap hit, level of play, length of contract, and recapture status. People i.e. fans, flyers management, need to borrow a page from the eagles salary cap mgmt playbook. Simply put 5 million or 6 million is an asset in and of itself extricated from the said players value.
I have read your posts before and you and Feanor are spot on. Kudos to you. That said i wish him the best to help our team.

No had to tie to get a point.
- JoeRussomanno

Sort of - that changed. In 1995-96, the AHL started awarding 1 point for overtime losses (they also tried it out in 1988 or so, as well). In 1996-97, the NHL adopted the rule. Prior to 1996-97, no point was awarded in the OT.

i advocate 2 for a team win, 1 for the skills competition and 0 for a loss
- isaiah520

I like this - or the 3 for regulation win, 2 for OT win, and 1 for a SO win scenario. 0 for a loss.

Either way, no loser points.

it'd be very difficult to make a cogent argument that bryz has been any better here than biron circa '09. i'd say, not quite as good really, but close.
- isaiah520

Bob backed up by Biron in 2010-11 would've been ok with me. Or 2011-12. Or 2012-13...

Right and the Bryz defenders will gladly point out that this team has been riddled with injuries on D so you can't make a fair comparison. However, last year, Bob and Bryz played in front of the same team and from memory I believe their stats were pretty similar. Bryz hasn't shown on the whole to be better than any of our past goalies in the past decade. Sure, he's had hot streaks but so did Leighton during the run to the Cup Finals.

Bryzgalov played 59 games and Bobrovsky played 29 games. Bryzgalov has a .909 SV% and Bobrovsky had a .899.

Bill,

With Laughton's likely suspension coming after his nasty hit last night, should it be a lengthy one and Oshawa doesn't survive past this round would the AHL/NHL uphold the rest of the suspension ?

I took 2 screen shots of it last night.

I agree that Bryz's contract is an albatross, but I don't agree that Miller is a true elite tender, and Lundqvist hasn't show an ability to take a team even to the finals.. So you are saying you'd be ok paying either of those two the money Bryz makes? What wpuld happen is fans here would lose it the first time there was a slump.. especially with Miller.. he'd get crucified here. thee real problem is that people either don't understand or don't care that a goalie can't win it all himself. Fix the D, and we see what we have with Bryz. Seemed ike he did just fine in Phoenix with their style of play? He comes here, and everyone thinks he's horrible.. At this point, I beleive that would happen to anyone not named Bernie..

I specifically mentioned Miller because he's on a bad team almost his entire career and still has posted some good stats. We think the Flyers are bad this year but Buffalo is even worse and it's just another typical year for them. Buffalo's offense is worse than the Flyers and so is their defense. Miller has played 2 games less than Bryz but has faced 103 more shots on goal. His save % is still a respectable .913. So Bryz gets a bye because this team doesn't play defense but Miller doesn't because his team also doesn't play defense? You might not agree Miller is an elite goalie. That's fine. For me, he's top 7-8 considering the crappy team he plays behind year after year.

Appreciate the feedback. I concur with you about the specifics about the other goal tenders. I do not necessarily agree about Bryzgalov's past being just "fine". I and philly dentist do not think he's horrible (essentially the other people targeting him for non hockey reasons amidst his inconsistent play do), but pdentists assessment is accurate. My point is that the retort "who are you going to replace him with" has less value in a capped world. In an uncapped world, you and others would be spot on. There is inherent value in his space independent of his talent level. Again that said, I am hopeful he will become more consistent and help our team to greater and far reaching success. And please leave Bernie out of this...LOL

Isn't it amazing how much better the look when they play the right way? And play responsibly defensively? You and I were calling for that change for how long. And this is with Coburn, Meszaros, and Grossmann out of the lineup. What I get a kick out of is when I read that must mean the players in there now, are better. When what it really means is that a team playing the right way, is always better then more talented players, playing as individuals. And playing the wrong way.

I just wonder how now, apparently, it is all about the particulars of the system being deployed, when before, the insistence was that systems don't matter, that all systems are similar and in use for many years and won Cups, and that it was rather, all about the effort? I'm having trouble reconciling the two views from the same person.

I think that the coach has made significant adjustments to the system to compensate for the loss of veterans and it has led to the improvement in overall play.

The puck support has been better, and there's been fewer instances of the forwards taking the first pass in the neutral zone or being caught flat footed as the defenseman has to lug the puck up ice and the three forwards are standing by the opposing team's blue line.
