Interesting, heard this on XM driving home yesterday
"As you know, the Columbus Blue Jackets have been pretty awful this year and part of that misery has been the brutal play of starting goalie Steve Mason.
Would you believe that Mason’s poor play may have resulted because he was wearing pads that were too small? It’s true according to Shawn Mitchell of The Columbus Dispatch, and Mason’s reasons for not wearing fitting pads are unreal.
“I never knew I could,” Mason said. “If I knew, I would have done it three years ago. I guess I was a little out of the loop on that kind of stuff. But we’ll make it work now.”
Mason says the old pads would leave him with bruises after getting hit with pucks in the ribs so often. Picture that if you will, playing goal with padding too small leaving more gaps in coverage to get hit by pucks being shot at 90-100 miles-per-hour at you. You might be pretty awful in goal too if your job was abusing you that way.
Not surprisingly, Mason’s numbers have improved since switching to the new equipment. Since making the switch he’s gone 7-3-1 and his numbers are more befitting that of a starting NHL goalie. If Mason can close out the season as strong as he’s playing now, it makes you wonder what might’ve been had he been more on top of things from the get go."

Miller wants to go out west so his Wife can see him more. Kings have Quick, San jose doesn't have enough money. Anaheim it is. - blacksheep1
Just because Millers wife is out west doesnt means hes going there. He knew what he was getting into. He has a commitment to play here and Darcy will dictate where he ends up if they move him. He could end up anywhere. |

I feel like at some point it's the goalie coaches responsibility to make sure that everything is right. Obviously Mason is just an idiot and never questioned it. You would think he would have asked his fellow netminders if similar things were occurring to them.

Did you mean they had a resurgence since the Thrashers left? They grew the most when the Thrashers were there, and having been somewhat connected to that area, I think they've actually contracted since the Thrashers left. They used to have like 4-5 youth travel organizations, and I think they are down to like 3. |

at the time of the thrashers leaving, youth hockey was at an insane high level at the time
I am curious to see how much it has dropped over the years |

I want Miller and Vanek gone in the summer, so sick of these two clowns and their big mouths. Maybe if Vanek didn't sign that offer sheet for 49 million dollars the team could have afforded more players around him for the big cup run...If winning is so important to Vanek maybe he shouldn't be low minus in the playoffs and score more goals...Maybe vanek should drink some milk or work out harder so he doesn't get hurt every other game. The guy is always hurt, sure he plays a lot of games but 70% of the time he is banged up and ineffective. he scores 30 goals in 30 games then the rest of the year he looks like an injured turtle. Miller is a cry baby with a goals against average of a 1980s goalie, he needs to shut his mouth and stop the pucks. Neither guy is living up to their big contracts, move them. What good is a goalie who can't stop a beach ball and a winger who is always hurt? so sick of the talking. |

Right, then Darcy can sign him. Giving the sabres the deepest center depth in the league. Then he can teach Ennis and Gerbe on the art of diving. |

Vanek's big mouth? I get what you're saying with Miller, but Vanek is generally pretty quiet. He tends to keep to himself and doesn't say much most of the time.
As far as Vanek being hurt all the time, I'd like to see you go out and stand infront of the opposing teams goal and not get hurt. Between getting crosschecked constantly and hit by errant pucks, he's bound to end up with some sort of injury. |
