prolly dosent have his mask ready
- mydoglicks

It's not uncommon for a newly acquired goalie to wear his old team's mask and pads, I don't think.

Marty Biron actually wore a plain white mask until his Flyers one was ready.

So who starts today?
- Yosimar89

I would go with Mason and see how this kid does. I think Bryz deserves a night off. 20 straight games is something

Briere's been a good soldier here, too.
- johndewar

I don't get this. Good soldier? Ok I guess we pay out the nose for him. He sees plenty of ice time when he's ineffective. He never gets chewed out by coaching for his crap play in the d zone. What's he have to complain about? He takes rookies in as hired friends for his kids, I'll give him that

He's good with the fans and out in public. He's played out of position when asked to and didn't whine (at least not publicly).

And don't undersell that whole taking in the rookies thing. One of those rookies he housed is now the face of the franchise.

Briere was "the guy" the year after the Flyers were the laughingstock of the league not too long ago.

There is no way they can go into next season carrying over a 7 million dollar cap hit in goalies. Bryz is a goner.

It all depends if Briere is healthy or not. If he is still having concussion issues this summer, he cannot be bought out.

- Jimmygrazz

They will. NO CHANCE that Bryz is amnestied this summer. Why would you amnesty a consistent, top 10 goaltender who is under contract long term for a goaltender that had 1 good year followed by poor years. On top of that, he lost his job to Bob. I'm sorry to say, but it would be the definition of insanity to drop Bryz without knowing what Mason can do in our system. Both goalies, as expensive as it is, will be Flyers next year and it will be Bryz's job to lose and Mason's job to win.

The health stuff certainly is of concern for Briere. I'm doubting that he still suffers concussion symptoms during the amnesty period, but stranger things have happened, especially when it comes to concussions.

Absolutely. If we didn't have so many young, promising centers on the team/farm; I'd keep him. Without a doubt. But the Salary Cap era sucks. Either way, he'll get his whole contract, and then some when he signs a new contract elsewhere. He just no longer justifies the 6.5 cap hit. He knows it as well. In the long run, the NHL is a business above all else.

Valid points. Let's have a moment of silence to remember his tenure

Thank you. Briere he's your buyout check.

I can't help but think that the Flyers could find a buyer for Briere. Big cap hit (helpful to teams like the Islanders) but almost no money actually owed for the next two years (helpful to teams like the Islanders).

Someone will be willing to pick up a guy with a pretty good reputation in the playoffs.

- Atomic Wedgie

Given his child custody situation, Briere may well have refused to waive his NMC and would prefer a buyout, to seek out his own deal, rather than being simply being stuck in the best situation that was interested in trading for him.

I'll yell "Crosby Sucks" with the best of them at the game, but you don't want to see a talent like that go out like this.

We all saw how Lindros went out. We got cheated, as fans.

Well, as long as his jaw is broken, he'll be doing a lot of sucking (eating through a straw). So this may be the only time when the Crosby Sucks chant makes any sense at all....

LOL, no. I'm literally the only one of my friends who called Crosby potentially gone for time with this one... As soon as I saw, I had a VERY strong feeling he would not just "be back soon." Just the way he went down, I suspected concussion.

Don't wanna see anyone get hurt, even rusty Sid. But, I would also be lying if I said I didn't feel slightly refreshed knowing Pittsburgh more than likely won't have him back for the start of the playoffs.

- Flyers_V88

With a wired shut jaw he'll be out for a while no matter what. And he'll lose muscle mass quickly, because it's hard to get enough protein when on a liquid diet. So it may be a challenge to compete when he does come back. But his agent and the team both deny he's had any concussion symptoms. It is possible Eskin's wrong, you know.

Yeah, I was thinking about that the other day - owners really wanted the amnesty buyouts, but it may turn into a double-edged sword. Guys like Briere know they are slated for buyout - why would you waive your NMC?

If they ever buy out Luongo, he'll get a $27,000,000 handshake. Judging by his performance at the presser yesterday, he may very well decide to take his stick and go home this summer until they buy him out.

He'll then be free to tell the Panthers he's willing to play for $2 million a year for 3 years, and retire with a happy wife.

Someone said that Mason signed a 1-year deal? If that's true, I think the writing is on the wall for the following situations:

1.) Bryz will NOT be amnestied in the summer of 2013. He MAY be amnestied in the summer of 2014, depending on what Mason can show during the remainder of this season and the 2013-2014 season. I think this is a sensitive situation, obviously. However, the one year deal says that the team wants to see what Bryz can do with one more full season under his belt. It also says that if Mason completely outshines Bryz in his backup/relief appearances, Bryz will be amnestied regardless.

2.) Briere WILL be amnestied in the summer of 2013. With 2014 being reserved for Bryz's potential amnesty, Briere will have to be amnestied this summer. I understand there is still a potential to hold onto him and use him for his veteran experience/playoff capabilities. But the fact remains that this team is getting younger and some larger contracts will be owed to some of our younger players. Briere's cap hit will not be manageable, especially with a dwindling cap.

Thoughts?

Who knows, wouldn't be the first time they added a "Anti-Devils" type player. They added Mogilny once upon a time.

Did he have his jaw wired shut?

I read an initial report that he may not have to have that done.

I think the PA wanted them as much as some owners. The owners were cool with it, as long as it was not outside of the players' share, which makes sense.

Depending on the buyouts this summer, we could see guys like Luongo being bargains for teams, as their old teams pay them for the next 15 years or more.
