What's the worse indignity, trading him for nothing or throwing him in a room full of media to say his contract sucks and he wishes he could tear it up? If Gillis was at all concerned about Luongo's dignity he would have moved him as soon as it was apparent that his time in Vancouver was coming to an end. Instead, he's carried on this farce for nearly a year. There's only one team in the league that doesn't view this trade as a salary dump and until that changes, nothing else will.

So? Leafs are eating several contracts and they've waived/buried several contracts. It's not a great business model but rich professional hockey teams don't follow those rules.

fair enough.

as a leaf fan, i'd happily take luongo at half price. i wouldn't even mind seeing the team give up quality assets for him in that scenario.

even if his play drops off earlier, at half price.. the buyout and subsequent cap hit will be a lot easier to eat.

by the sounds of it, nonis was offered him about as close to nothing as you can get without going right to nothing before 3 today, and politely declined.

by the looks of it, even if lu is free.. nonis doesn't want him as long as he's tied to that term.

You don't know that and neither do I. Next year is next year, a lot of things can happen.

The waivers/buried contracts are a thing of the past. Plus, none of those contracts were a decade long.

Finn and Percy may be a bit behind Corrado but again not enough for any of us to argue this guy is better than that.... Prock is one of the true troll leaf posters..... You cannot hold guys like Prock that have no respect in the Leaf's thread against the rest us Leafs....
- jribout

I don't. I think most Leaf fans who I've had discussions with on this site would agree that I don't treat anyone any different based on the teams they support, as long as they want to discuss hockey politely.

I know a lot of outsiders want it to be, but they'll figure it out in due time. Until then it's playoff time soon.
- LeftCoaster

If you look at the numbers, it's really really bad. If Gillis manages to figure it out and ice a competitive team next season then he's going to run away with GM of the year. It's that bad.

And like all the tsn analysts said, Gilis dug his own whole on this one. I have been saying from the start of the year the Canucks won't get a thing for Luongo. And considering TO was the only one in on LU, you think Nonis is dumb enough to give up anything of value for him? Darren dreger tweeted that the Canucks gave the Leafs 3 different offers today before the deadline, and the Leafs rejected all of them. Pierre Lebrun said the Canucks want Scrivens and a couple of 2nd round picks. LOL tells you what Gilis thinks the great canucks goalie is worth. And I'm glad the leafs didn't accept that trade. Keep that terrible contract suckers. Or buy him out for 30 years LOL

Correct me if I'm wrong, but i believe each team gets two buy outs that don't count against the cap? Although I don't see that as an option.

We did neither, or we did both considering ur POV.

We got a player with the capability to significantly help us now while also staying the course asset wise.

Whats wrong with that?

- Whiskey-Tango

For 17 games. I haven't heard one hocky analyst say this is exactly what we need to get over the hump. No use female doging about it I think we will see in 12 regualr games and 5 playoff games Roy say goodbye.

What would make the trade significant in ur eyes?

Second round exit?
Third?
Cup?

What would it take for you to submit to the mighty Gillis.

Then it may come to a buy out. We have two free get out of jail cards to play. Again, who knows?

Correct. I see that likely being applied to Ballard certainly, and maybe booth. Could buy out them both, free up $3m more cap than luo, and still spend less money overall.

Fair enough... I think its unfair to speculate Gillis screwed up he has had little choice up to right now but to hold onto him... If we really wanted him at all I imagine we would have done the deal today.... I really think the Leafs were holding out for Vancouver to retain some of the contract......

Draft time will be intersting but Hackett to Buffalo (Makes Miller trade a reality); Smith could be on the market, and tampa Picked up their goalie today.... will NYI really hold both Dipietro and Luongo at the same time? The options might be buy out or retain salary

On the other hand maybe they get lucky

Your pessimism is getting cartoon-ish. The Canucks aren't that bad. There is no reason to believe that they can't make a series out of it in Round 1 with no opponent even lined up yet.

Hence my question how much further back can we go..... Lu is a future problem.... When the contract was signed it was great... To bad you got screwed by the new CBA... But you have to admit that contract is a huge problem.....
- jribout

It was a bad contract when it was signed. Great player, but bad contract. There were a ton of people calling it a mistake at the time for the same reason that's turned it into a problem.
