It would have been if there was a followup deal . Maybe some fans here don't mind giving up picks for things that won't significantly help us now ,I am not one.

I felt go all in or stay the course . We did neither.

- VANTEL

The main problem will be next year. Its been speculated upon numerous times by numerous commentators, but MG is going to have to get very creative to in order to fit in so many with so little room. Gotta buy out a couple and then find someone who will take one of your goalies, and possibly one of your D...

We did neither, or we did both considering ur POV.

We got a player with the capability to significantly help us now while also staying the course asset wise.

Whats wrong with that?

I see it as an issue for Lu, but not for the Canucks. It's not currently stopping them from competing. Who knows what the future holds, but they'll deal with it in due time. If they have to waive him in the fall because there's no takers, then they waive him. What's the big deal?
- LeftCoaster

The new CBA does not allow you to bury a full contract in the minors like before. A small portion of the cap is removed (I think about 900k), but the remainder stays on the cap hit of the big club

because if they have to resort to waiving him, they're on the hook for half of his salary.. no?

.. if someone takes him. if not, you still have his whole salary - a million bucks.

Luongo has pretty much garenteed he won't be playing for 9 more years I don't see the problem.
- pker2theend

the longer he plays the bigger the cap hit when he retires.... as it stands right now if he is traded this summer and retires at 40 you will have a cap hit the last 3 years of his contract

The big deal still remains his contract. Waiving him only solves the problem if a team is willing to take on that contract, and by fall, teams wont be looking for a goalie anymore.

He'd be claimed, but again, I don't know what will happen other than something will happen.

Dude, our biggest hole all year has been up the middle. We addressed that somewhat with Roy but perhaps (injury?????) more importantly Kesler is set to return. We haven't seen a roster this deep in the middle since the night Manny got hurt.

Teams are always looking to improve, otherwise what's the point. How many teams would take Lu for absolutely nothing. I know Nonis would.

by the sounds of it, nonis was offered him about as close to nothing as you can get without going right to nothing before 3 today, and politely declined.

by the looks of it, even if lu is free.. nonis doesn't want him as long as he's tied to that term.

You are absolutely correct. Maybe he will decide he doesn't want the $6.7m he is due in 2017-18 or maybe he thinks that he couldn't be bothered with $3.4 m the next year.

There seems to be a consensus among 29 GMs that there actually might be a bit of a problem.

I don't know if he would. Under the old CBA he'd be gone in a minute, but now I'm not so sure. Jokinen passed through waivers, and only went for a seventh when the Canes retained a good portion of his salary.

If the Nucks would keep some of the salary back, then they could perhaps push through a deal.

Looking to improve is one thing. Getting a 34 year old goalie, making 5.5 until 2021 or so is making a commitment. No chance a team goes into September still looking for a goalie when they could solve the problem in July or August.

I know Nonis wouldnt. I know this because he could have and didn't.

And like all the tsn analysts said, Gilis dug his own whole on this one. I have been saying from the start of the year the Canucks won't get a thing for Luongo. And considering TO was the only one in on LU, you think Nonis is dumb enough to give up anything of value for him? Darren dreger tweeted that the Canucks gave the Leafs 3 different offers today before the deadline, and the Leafs rejected all of them. Pierre Lebrun said the Canucks want Scrivens and a couple of 2nd round picks. LOL tells you what Gilis thinks the great canucks goalie is worth. And I'm glad the leafs didn't accept that trade. Keep that terrible contract suckers. Or buy him out for 30 years LOL

So? Leafs are eating several contracts and they've waived/buried several contracts. It's not a great business model but rich professional hockey teams don't follow those rules.

you trade him this summer and he retires at 40 you will have a 2.5 million cap hit the last three years of his salary.... the longer you keep him the bigger the hit...
If you keep him and he retires at 40 his cap hit is 4.77 million for 3 years
