in 1976, Phil Esposito was miserable, and I mean miserable about being a Ranger. In order to appease him, the Rangers acquired his buddy Ken Hodge from his Bruins days. Espo told management "Get me Hodgie"
so the Rangers traded 22 year old Rick Middleton, who went on to score close to 500 goals and 1000 points in the NHL for 32 year old Hodge who played one full season for the Rangers before being sent to the minors the following year.
You couldn't get more opposite a trade than what the Rangers did with Gaborik yesterday. The typical Rangers back in the day would have traded three guys in their early 20's for a 32 year old. Very opposite. - jimbro83
He wasn't much of a general manager as player nor was he as a general manager. I was all of 3 years old...
That was my problem with the trade. I thought if traded Gaborik would at least bring us back our 1st we lost in this deep draft. The new guys looked awesome last night and I admit after the results of game 1 I looked foolish for bashing it. But also still think the Rangers should have got more than what they did for a guy as talented as Gaborik. - pcjr307
Sather has proven time time again that his trades are simply fleece jobs. Maybe GAGorik thrives in Columbus, but he wasn't gonna here anymore. They got real talent in both trades....and if course "jam" he saw what they lacked and swooped it up. And Dorsett may be our player added when alls said and done. From what I remember he'd like Avery(more of a teammate tho), Torres (but a cleaner player) and prust rolled into one.
hey, I was all of 5 years old, but my grandfather used to tell me about it every other day, when my grandmother wasn't yelling at him - jimbro83
I only became a big hockey fan b/c my dad (RIP) as an italian immigrant couldn't find any decent soccer, yes there was the old NASL but it wasn't the best the sport had to offer. So hockey being somewhat similar was a natural thing for him to start. He was a a restaurant manager so my mom used to let me stay up late so we could watch the Rangers play (on the road only of course) on a tape delay on channel 9. Jim Gordon and the Big Whistle. Ah poop, I don't mean to get all pansy-ass on you guys lol

I know those times very well, lol
my brother and I used to listen to the games on the radio too while playing floor hockey in the basement.
And everytime they used to score, we'd meet in the middle and start hugging, talk about pansy ass

very, very, very bad memories for me - airjan23
My memories of Espo are of him being such a homer color guy on MSG w Sam right before JD came into the booth. And then of course his boneheaded stint as GM.

Yea I didnt liek the trade but thats pretty stupid.
I used to do listen to Marv Albert and the way he never used to say face-off...it was always "the face"...I won many cups in my basement - Blueshirts4ever
the Rangers used to have this cool siren back in the early 80's when they scored.
I remember back then, sometimes when you are listening on the radio somebody scores and for a moment you don't know which team, and I always remember the joy of hearing that siren in the backround when it was them

Espo's best years as player were in Boston. He was very, very unhappy the day he was traded to New York, of course the bright lights and all NYC has to offer quickly changed his mind. I remember going to a game at the old Boston garden, there was a wall filled with graffedi (spelling), and in the middle of the wall someone had spray painted "Jesus saves" and in a different spray, someone added, "and Espo puts in the rebound". Great stuff.

I remember that...in fact that had that siren through 94 didn't they?
One thing that left me scratching my head last night... When the fourth line had that great shift where they kept the puck in the pens zone for a full shift.. I kept saying "where has this been all year?"
The forecheck was awesomenlast night, finally.
I hope this team takes on more of a lunch pale style. God knows they arent gonna be potting six goals a game, but if they play like they did last night i LOVE our chances.
Also, it was good that hank finally had a game where he didnt get strafed.
I'm not sure when the GOAL song started, but that may be right - jimbro83
Was just watching 94 highlights, the horn they have now was used in 94 but the song came later but they finally wore that song out last night, it my favorite song ever!
