Is there any precedence for this? and would the PA allow it?....Morning
- JIMI-JAMES

not allowed in the CBA. That would open the door to a whole lot of cap hit manipulation.

Here's the question .....

If Luongo's contract was 4 years @ $6.7M per ....

Would you want him on the Leafs ?

This may sound biased, but I honestly would feel the same even if the Canucks didn't have the Luongo contract, but it's total bullsh!t that the NHL is punishing teams now in the new CBA for contracts that were legal under the old CBA. I get that they're saying that those contracts signed should assume that the player will play it out since it would be illegal and unethical to sign a player to a contract with the intention of having the player retire before it runs out(not sure if that makes sense, but you get what I mean). But that's still not fair IMO. They should have at least given those players/teams a window to renegotiate their contacts or something before this season started as a last chance for players and GM's to undo those contracts that are now frowned upon.
- Nucker101

From a Toronto fan point of view the reality is this...

OTHER teams went out and signed cap-circumventing contracts. They knew damn well what they were doing and basically laughed at the league and did it anyway.

You cannot pretend for even a second that Vancouver did not know that the contract was cap-circumventing. So, you got off scott-free and now, all of a sudden you have to pay the full price of what you signed.

Remember... Toronto had a GM that would not do that and because of it we lost out on at least 1 prime Free Agent.

So yeah, nothing personal towards you, but I have little sympathy for any team suffering from their stupid signings.

Last year I mentioned that people should not be discussing playoffs until they were actually in the playoffs. People laughed.

The Leafs have NOT made the playoffs yet.

Lu's cap hit is only $5.3M though - it isn't debilitating at all. The only issue is term.

Oilers would be stupid not to take him on waivers.

a trade for Miller, Van could then flip Miller elsewhere for assets. Buffalo needs a new starter, and they just watched Leafs search for one for 5 years and still not be certain they have 1.

- Big_Lightnin

I'm not so sure there are any teams that would take him on waivers. Not at this point. He's coming off a horrible season, and he's 34. It's not uncommon for goalies to start to decline, quite badly, at this age. The Cujos and Belfours that play into their 40s are in a very heavy minority. 34 years old is generally the end of an NHL players career.

I think Gillis is going end up trading Lou in a stupidly one sided deal. I wonder if we could get Bieksa + Kassian as a ransom for the contract...
- Viktory

Gillis had the chance to dodge the biggest bullet of his career. It seems that he actually had at least one team ready to take on that contract. Luongo for a 7th rounder would have been a GREAT trade for Gillis and Vancouver.

He was too stupid or stubborn to see it.

12 games left. Need about 4 or 5 wins out of that. They're pretty much in.

No.

I believe his best years are past and 6.7 is too much for a goalie in his mid-30's.

"Pretty much" is a HUGE distance from mathematically qualified.

Yes, I believe they will make it at this point... but any Leafs fan who assumes it is a done deal is a blind homer with a very short memory span.

Wait... so, Simmons is a "complete tool" because it's been reported (and never denied) that the Leafs were trying to acquire Kipper and had plenty of talks with Vancouver regarding Luongo? Am I getting this wrong or...?
