With Tampa supposedly following the Rangers around, maybe will see a Gaborik for Marty St. Louis deal.
- Pete V

Was hoping for a Nate Thompson pickup but they just extended him

I agree with your numbers. I also think that they can open up some space by replacing Boyle and Pyatt with cheaper options if need be. That is certaintly not to say that Gaborik shouldn't be moved if the right deal presents itself. I actually think that the Rangers could get more for Gaborik right now, at this trade deadline, then they could get this summer. But, that would, of course, effect their chances of success this year.

McD from 1.3M to 3.5 or 4M
Step from .875M to 3M
Hags from .875 to 2M
Total = 9M

It's possible and these are fair deals. Give McD 4 or 5 years where Step and Hags would get 2 year deals.

just think, if that happens like that, and Gaborik is still here, we are essentially stuck with the same team that is barely a playoff team this year.

They have to move him, even if they get beat on the trade, they have to move his salary out of here.

With Ryan O'Reilly getting what he did as an RFA, if Stepan wants to play hardball, he can get $5 million a year, simply by signing someone's offer sheet. As a result, I think $3 million is a little too optimistic for Stepan. He has just been too good.

I see around $4 million a piece for Stepan and McDonagh, and about $2.25-$2.5 million for Hagelin.

Raffi Torres anyone? Don Maloney, always a good conversation to be had. Too reckless? Only as a rental, the cost? Just throwing it out there. I think Jimbro brought it up earlier, I'm just resurrecting the thought...

I actually think that is a perfect move. He's a rental that won't cost so much, that ads a little bit of an edge. Note of caution, however. Shanny may have cut his balls off with last suspension. If you look at his PIMs this year, he has been a virtual choir boy.

Edit: 13 PIMs on the year so far. He literally could win the Lady Bying.

You are low balling Stepan here. Piggybacking Pete's point, Stepan's camp will use O'Reilly's contract as a frame of reference in the negotiation process.

Very well, then. Keep in mind Sather has Redden's cap hit off the books next year ala buyout (6.5M). Subtractions of Hamrlik (3.5), Halpern (700k), and (hate to say it) Sauer on LTIR (1.25) gives about 11M relief to resign Step, Hags, and McD.

Yeh, I got you. They have about $11 million, and if need be, they could shave another $1.5 million or so from Boyle's and Pyatt's contracts (by moving them).

...and, I could be wrong, Drury's buyout hit finally comes off the books, too. That adds another 1.5M or so.

So, there's cap room without making drastic moves.

The $11 million estimate of available space takes into account Drury's buy-out coming off the books.

I think the Rangers can make everyone fit, provided that McDonagh and Stepan don't play real hardball (which they could), but basically the Rangers would be coming back with the same team to start the year (or very close to it).

I would actually be okay with that...as long as Torts and Sather hire someone to run the PP. A new FULL season with a full training camp and preseason along with realignment...I expect no worse than they are now.

the cap goes down to 64 million next year and we have 11.6 million in space, and that takes into account everybody who is leaving, Hamrlik being gone, Drury's deal off, etc...

getting Stepan, McDonagh and Hagelin all fit into the salary structure is going to be some trick.

At this point I think a Richards buyout summer of 2014 is a foregone conclusion.

I could actually see the Rangers making a mid-tier type of move with the Yotes where they trade for both Derek Morris (righty shot) and Raffi Torres, neither of whom I think will come expensive. The problem with Morris is that he has an extra year on his deal at almost $3 million, and he (or Stalman) would need to be moved this summer because of the Rangers cap issues. The Rangers would need to be absolutely sure that they could move one of those guys, because otherwise, they would be screwign themselves.

Lebrun reporting that Dallas has decided to move Jagr. Wonder where he ends up. Boston seems like the logical destination.

yeah, I was just tweeting that although I am someone who hates looking at the past when trying to improve, but, if somehow Jagr was a Ranger by tomorrow, I'd actually get excited by that, not gonna lie

I don't think it's a possibility though

LMAO!!! Tampa traded Bergeron to Carolina for Adam Hall! Adam Hall to Tampa...the same team that waived him just a few weeks ago!

How does that work?

Agree. I would like to see that, too. Dallas isn't going to require--or get--much in return (Jagr is a sure rental), though; so it's possible. A 3rd or 4th rounder and a mid-tier prospect could get the deal done.

depends, a bidding war could develop.

Boston might be willing to do whatever it takes to get him since missing out on Iginla.

They would probably throw in their first rounder

Jagr has a big personality, and can't see Torts getting along with him. The only way I can see it happening is if some of the current leadership group served as a character reference with Torts for Jagr.

Ouch! Then Boston can have him. I would never give a 1st rounder for Jagr....unless this was 5 or more years ago. I'd go as high as a 2nd rounder (with no prospects) if I had to bid. Otherwise, I look elsewhere...unless...

...Jagr and Eriksson (or Roy) for 2nd rounder, Richards, and Boyle.

well, lets just realize that Brad Richards will not be traded anywhere. He has a No Movement Clause, and it's not even in the realm of possibility that Dallas would want to acquire him back while they are in total sell mode.
