I dont even know what your point is anymore. You just keep going on an on and are getting further away from what was initially stated. - theblueandgold
You're right, this is getting convoluted. My main point was you can't rag on Darcy for matching the Vanek contract, because of the state of the team when he did pretty much handcuffed him. Also, hindsight is 20/20.
Point #2: Players like Crosby don't come around very often, and you can't count on getting them every time you pick in the top 5 of the draft. Players like Crosby expedite rebuilds like Pitt's. Without getting lucky on him, they aren't the team they are today. The Sabres would not necessarily be any further along as a team than Edmonton is if we had their picks, since none of those picks have turned into a Crosby-like player.
Point #3: I think it takes more than 'having at least one top 5 pick' on your team to win a cup. (I know this wasn't an argument you were making, I just included it to respond to sbroads as well.) |

I disagree. With all of the high-paid, fragile egos out there, I don't think GMs rattle their key players every year just in case a deal comes up. You tend to keep those guys happy.
Don't you think that if Miller was asked for his list that it would be out by now? He gets more media attention than Pominville, and runs his mouth at the drop of a hat. - keptupl8
Teams in sell mode they are all given lists
IM sure he has millers list just cause it hasnt leaked yet doesnt mean its not there |

totally agree. and the timing of this request is a bit telling as well. pommer doing interviews as of fri saying the rumors are preposterous because he hasnt been asked to waive, then he gets asked days later. interesting for sure... |

I guess that's where it just doesn't gel for me. Pominville hardly says anything. Miller is more vocal and gets more attention. I would be shocked if he submitted a list and it was still a secret. |

Lets just say for argument sake, Vanek Pommer and Stafford are all moved for picks and some mid level prospects that are not NHL ready. Would majority of the fanbase (not just this board) sit through a season with a roster thats in a full rebuild.

Sure you can. If he wouldn't have bungled the Briere and Drury contracts so badly he wouldn't have had to match Vanek. Cause and effect. |

there was talk of miller giving it before the season but that was when TP was talking about miller retiring a sabre so i doubt that was true. TBN tweeted that a source close to miller said he has no idea if he will be in buffalo after wed which makes me think he has now provided the list.
so glad im on vacation this week!!! |

I'd sit through anything that had the appearance of moving in the right direction. This team has taken steps backwards since Pegula took over. |

LEGGIO IS THE TRUTH! - BuffaloKyle
http://amerks.com/newsX.asp?type=News&aID=725
The American Hockey League announced today that David Leggio of the Rochester Americans has been selected as the CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month for March.
Leggio went 9-4-0 with a 1.86 goals-against average, a .946 save percentage and two shutouts, allowing two goals or fewer in 11 of his 13 appearances during the month.
Leggio began March by snapping a personal four-game losing streak with a 35-save outing in a 2-1 overtime win at Syracuse on Mar. 2. He made 38 stops in defeating Lake Erie, 4-2, on Mar. 3, and his 44 saves in a 5-0 win over Abbotsford on Mar. 8 were the most in a shutout by any AHL goaltender this season. Leggio won his fifth straight game in a 3-1 decision over Binghamton on Mar. 13, and made at least 36 saves in four consecutive starts from Mar. 22-29, including a 38-save shutout of Syracuse on Mar. 27.
Leggio, who has appeared in 36 of Rochester’s 40 games since Christmas, leads the AHL in wins (35), minutes played (3,433), shots faced (1,910) and saves (1,765) while posting a record of 35-21-1 with a 2.53 GAA, a .924 save percentage (fifth in the AHL) and four shutouts. The fifth-year pro from Buffalo, N.Y., is 85-59-3 with nine shutouts in 149 career AHL appearances |

Pominville on the ice with the team right now. Makes you think that they fielded offers but aren't impressed yet. I guess the pregame skate and if he actually plays tonight are the better indicators of a trade in the works. But even that isn't 100% |

I think in both cases you need the list first, cause Miller could just say no to the first 8 teams that offer something. No point in talking to any team til you know the list of 8 for both players. |

The only thing you can say "hindsight is 20/20" on was Thomas Vanek's performance since signing that contract. Yeah, I couldnt have predicted that he wasnt going to be a 40 goal 80 point player like he was playing on the third line against weaker defensemen.
However, you cant tell me that "hindsight is 20/20" when I felt then as I do now, that Thomas Vanek, or hardly any player is ever worth FOUR 1st round draft picks. Whether thats from a playoff team or not. For four years, your team is guaranteed two first round draft picks.
So yes, I can rag on Darcy for not thinking long term and immediately matching the contract.
- BuffaJoe
Crosby was #3 on a list of top 5 picks. Even with Crosby, and the other 2 top 5 picks, they still missed the playoffs the following year. Then only made it to the first round the next year. So 2 full years of Crosby playing before they made anything of it. This is all with them surrounded by other top 5 talent.
Now, if the Sabres had not matched the Vanek contract. They wouldve done the same thing Pittsburgh did. They wouldve had a top 5 draft pick for 4 straight years, PLUS an extra first round draft pick. That they might have been able to flip for some quality veterans. They chose to over pay a nearly unproven player and be mediocre instead of rebuilding the easy way, through the draft after losing 2 of the franchise building blocks in Drury and Briere.
---
This is the last I'll say of it because its going in circles. Feel free to have the last word. |

Lets be honest the "real list" is 100x harder to work out with a goalie then a forward.
Id say for miller the "real" list is about 3 teams |

I agree with you to a certain extent, but once Drury and Briere had already left, he really didn't have a choice on Vanek. Also, the general consensus has been that he was handcuffed by ownership to not be able to make the Drury and Briere deals palatable enough to keep them in town. |

That works if he has a full NMC/NTC. But if they decide to trade him, I would think Darcy would want the 21 teams he can talk to so that he can get the best deal possible. If trading him was a possibility, you wouldn't limit it to the 2 teams who called you first.
27 hours to go... we'll see I guess |
