Key word in all of this: Crosby. You don't get Crosby in the draft every year. As for the top-5 draft point from earlier, I don't quite have the time to look up everyone's draft positions, but the players that carry teams to the Stanley Cup are not only found in the top 5 of the draft. It's actually more important to draft well outside of those top spots, or, like the Kings did last year, trade for former first rounders. Cups are not contingent upon having top-5 draft picks. - BuffaJoe
Yes they pretty much are. Or at least having guys with top 5 talent on your roster.
LA Kings 2012 - Drew Doughty 2nd overall
Boston Bruins 2011- Nathan Horton, Tyler Seguin.
Chicago Blackhawks 2010- Patrick Kane, Jonathon Toews
Pittsburgh Penguins - enough said.
I can keep going until before the lockout. It's more than a coincedence

yeah pretty much.
don't see that happening, but who knows. i'm exciting to see something I didn't expect this year. the hodgson trade last year should be proof enough alone to people that darcy is willing to go H.A.M on the deadline if he has to. |

I just dont seem him allowed to move "the big 3". Those other two were no brainers on expiring contracts. I just dont know why he would be back next year as the GM, and if thats the case, why would be trusted in trading our best assets. - Mentalorgasm5
Then why was Pominville asked for his 8 team list? |

right now there really is know way of truly knowing if he was. But even if he was, could stir up some interest and if they get an out of the world offer he might be allowed to take it. |

Try to name a team that has won a stanley cup without having a top 5 pick in the NHL draft on their roster in the last 10 years. You can't. You need top end talent. You can't pick between 10-25 every year and expect to win a cup. The Red Wings are the exception to the rule, even they have had top 5 draft picks on their roster - sbroads24
its tough to really compare the redwings to anyone.... they were by far the best team at evaluating european talent and really established the model for recruiting european players |

haha. me too actually. alot.
buuuut- hes a 10yr vet, little, and has one year left (5mil/per) on his deal. wouldnt make alot of sense with the direction sabres appear to be headed. its like trading pommer for pommer essentially (i know they are a bit different but you get the idea)...

I disagree. With all of the high-paid, fragile egos out there, I don't think GMs rattle their key players every year just in case a deal comes up. You tend to keep those guys happy.
Don't you think that if Miller was asked for his list that it would be out by now? He gets more media attention than Pominville, and runs his mouth at the drop of a hat. |

I know we do. But the argument was that top end picks like Edmonton's don't mean as much because they have had a top pick forever and they haven't become a contender |

per thehockeynews...
"Geoffrion was just 25 years old and was the 2010 Hobey Baker winner. However, his career ultimately came to a tragic end after he was hit and clipped in the head by a skate on Nov. 9. He sustained a depressed skull fracture. "I love the game of hockey more than anything and this decision tears me up inside," Geoffrion says, "but we are talking about my brain." |

Regier will be here for the next 3 years. The only way I can see him fired is if during the 2014-2015 season the Sabres are in last place. And then the Sabres will probably win the cup in 2015-2016 because of the team he built lol. |
