Its not an "unsuccessful" rebuild. As I said before, Quebec was the other team in NHL that drafted first overall 3 years in a row. 5 years after their last pick (which wouldve been Yakupov, which was last year), they won a cup. Oilers are done rebuilding. They are in year 1 of the turnaround. Hell, they might make the playoffs this year. Wont be a threat, but they might make it.

They only lack a goaltender.

It blows my mind that these guys with no connections actually get heard. I know it's just the game of who said it first, but this is the whole reason I don't twitter.

Try to name a team that has won a stanley cup without having a top 5 pick in the NHL draft on their roster in the last 10 years. You can't. You need top end talent. You can't pick between 10-25 every year and expect to win a cup. The Red Wings are the exception to the rule, even they have had top 5 draft picks on their roster

The last team to draft first overall 3 years in a row was Quebec. How long did it take them to win a cup after that last first overall pick? 5 years. They traded one of those picks for more players, and found themselves a franchise goalie.

The only thing left for them is to find a goalie. They should probably trade one of Yakupov or Nugent-Hopkins for a larger package of players in my opinion. They do one or both of these things, they will be a playoff team in probably 2 years minimum.

For every Edmonton Oilers unsuccessful rebuild, there are the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Chicago Blackhawks. Chances are if we take the 4 1sts, we are a contender right now. They tried to put this team on Vanek and Pominville's shoulders and failed.

Edit: As far as their ELC's, Hall and Eberle are already signed long term to 6 Mil per season, which in 3 years could be a huge bargain

Chicago was 6 years (including the lockout year, which they still got a draft pick) since they made the playoffs previously, which they also had 4 years of not making it before then.

Pittsburgh was 5 years (including the lockout year, which we know they got Crosby) since they made the playoffs previously, and they finished bottom of their division each year, including 1 year after getting Crosby.

Oilers have now been 6 years without being in the playoffs, and they might make it this year.

Malkin was #2 to Ovechkin.

He did, and he's apparently asked Pommer for his list, so I'd say it's happening. Gotta make sure you get a good return for these guys, though, you can't just give them away, and in any negotiation, any teams inquiring about these guys are going to try and get them as cheap as possible. It takes time to find the right deal, and these guys have a lot of value.

I agree with all of that. Just too be bad that it has taken Darcy this long to realize it's time to blow it up. For that alone, he should be fired (and would have been by every other team in the league except Buffalo).
