There are some defensive dmen that are better than Smid, and many that are less good. I do know there are few defensive dmen as good or better than Smid that are as young as he is. Realistically, we've got him through his prime. |

Interesting. This seems like a deal that would go player for player. Carolina may or may not make the playoffs this year, but with Semin, Staal, Staal, Skinner, Ruutu, Pitkanen, Gleason and Ward in their future, they're obviously trying to retool.
The Oilers have four options in trying to acquire a top dman within their means:
1) Acquire a guy who isn't top pairing and hope he grows into it (McBain)
2) Sign a top pairing guy
3) Draft a guy and develop him into top pairing
4) Acquire a top pairing guy with question marks about him (Campbell and JBO are overpaid, Visnovsky/Markov wrong side of 30, Mike Green's injuries)
#3 is the most cost effective but is the hardest and takes the longest. Arguably #4 is the 2nd most cost effective and #1 is 3rd most (not to mention more feasible than winning a FA sweepstakes) so I think it's either going to be a relatively unproven youngster or a proven question mark.
I'll bet CAR asks for a deal centered around Paajarvi/Hemsky/Gagner frankly, and that's a big price to pay. He's not having the hottest year, so I may be wrong. |

carolina won't take on hemsky in my opinion just because of more salary on their books. signing semin was a showing they are willing to pay up and compete, but i think it'll be mcbain for young prospects and picks. i think carolina will ask for mps... |

Paajarvi I could see, but if it were prospects and picks why wouldn't they just keep him? He's pretty young and still improving. |

Random thought of the day.. Eric Brewer to Edmonton?? Anybody like that or no? would be cheap and would be a great partner for Schultz. |

Does Brewer skate the puck very well? Nice shot, more veteran leadershio, and I agree Schultz needs a defensive conscience, but I'd rather a two-way guy than another stay at home guy. What do you think Brewer would cost? |

My thought is like a 3rd round pick. if that doesnt do it add a C prospect.. |

No. It would just remind me that somehow we once traded him for Pronger and then I will be sad. |

Don't forget that we added Jeff Wowikta and Doug Lynch to that deal.

I think it that happens we're safe to either move our pick or move up in the round. It'd be interesting to see if two teammates were in and around 16th and 17th in prospects... |

good deal for both parties. nice one laddy. content
some posters were mentioning smids worth on the open market which may have been higher, but he wanted to stay and he took what the oilers could reasonably offer with their big picture in mind.
when i was hearing some people wanted to pay him upwards of 4 mil long term, i just have to give my head a shake.
winning a few games and showing some promise has so much to do with signing guys. it may not be the most sought after destination, but dudes will sign if they think they can win. all the haters and the trolls convienently disregard that when they bash edmonton. |

nice one - hugefemale dog77
In my mind, not really a huge ometown discount from Smid, but less than he could have gotten (see Volchenkov, Anton) in Free Agency. |

agreed. 3.5 was my ceiling for the oilers to pay. i think some people may have overestimated his impact level as we have no one else that does his job and they just wanted to pay him huge dollars for fear of losing him. the oilers wouldve regretted that long term. we cant just be throwing money at every guy that says he wants to stay.
athough a hometown discount woulda been closer to 3, 3.5 is reasonable for sure as some bonehead gm prob woulda gave him something silly over 4.
and it's through his prime.. |

A reasonable signing, agreed not much of a discount.
I like Brewer, but he is top pairing in tampa, is he UFA?
