Signed a while ago, tryout is only for this year so he doesn't burn a year if they wish to use him.

This is why a rebuild can't happen in Toronto.

Read the last 2 pages.

The team is young and about to make the playoffs for the first time in almost a decade. What is some of the discussion? Trading Kadri and Kessel, adding a 34 year old goalie with almost a decade long contract...

Come on Leaf fans, turn up the happy, turn down the stupid.

(frank)ing insane. Absolutely bizarre.

Why does everyone want to trade Kessel? I dont get it, hes playing the best hockey of his life and is what 24-25 yrs old?
- Bigzby

He's definitely gotten better in all facets of the game. I think this year is an adjustment period in terms of how to fit in Carlyles system offensively, but he's passing with flying colours in my books. He's not lighting the lamp as much, but he's droppin' alot more dimes, he's back checking and he's playing all three zones. Now he's never going to be nominated for the Selke LOL, but he's improving.

Leafs offer a 7th rounder. The Leafs would take him.
- faceto27

The problem is Gillis won't take a 7th rounder...He's waiting for a 1st, #1 center and #3 dman...

If no team wants to trade for him, what other options do they have?
- Flyfreaky

trade schneider

if they cant get what they want for luongo i bet thats exactly what they do

unless gillis can convince aquillini that throwing away 40million dollars ins a good idea

U can bet there 8-10 teams interested in Robidas..Given what D-men have been traded for so far i say it would cost u a 1st round pick..
- Fruitcakenipple

Hmm.. 20th pick overall in a deep draft... not sure I pull that trigger.

BAsed on him signing the tryout, I'd imagine the plan to use him in some games. Getting him ready for next year.

Kessel is improving... I actually saw him throw a good body check in the Ottawa game, did anyone else see it?

That's not the point.

The point is beyond this season. What we do in the playoffs this season is rather irrelevant. It's a young and inexperienced team with hardly any playoff experience at all. Anything in the playoffs is a bonus at this point. Lets not go from lottery pickers to cup contending right away. Whats the rush?

While Luongo most likely gives this team a much better shot in the playoff, this season, its the 8 or so seasons after this year that makes him more of a burden than a saviour.

the contractual trick is to get rid of the compliance buyout targets the Leafs currently have, and then if necessary buyout Luongo at the end of next year - summer 2014.

I know everyone thinks I'm nuts, but I've been suggesting the following or similar since last summer....

Komisarek, Connolly, MacArthur, Gunnarson and Liles -> YVR

Luongo, Edler + 2nd -> YYZ

Vancouver would instantly trim 10M off their CAP going forward. They wouldn't need to buyout Komisarek, just let him rot in the minors for another year. Connolly's contract is expiring and gives them a stop gap 2nd/3rd line center for this year. MacArhur also has expiring contract and could fit in anywhere on theire 2nd/3rd lines. Gunnarson will resign for approx 2.5M , much less expensive than Edler, and would fit in better on that very overpriced blue-line. Liles becomes the longer term contract tax for the Leafs taking Luongo.

For the Leafs they clear all those questions out... and get a potentially top-flight goalie that they could try out for a partial and full season before deciding to buy him out - if they so chose. Edler solves the Phaneuf pairing question - gives Leafs a physically larger more robust d-man than either Liles or Gunnarson.

It is going to require Gillis making a deal like this so save his job. I'm guessing if they the fish tank in the playoffs early and he hasn't addressed to some degree his CAP issues... he's gone.

part of me wonders if they already have an acceptable deal for schneider but havent pulled the trigger on it waiting to see if someone is dumb enough to take on luongo's contract at their asking price.

if no takers then they pull the trigger on moving schneider

its the only reasonable explanation for gillis' asking price on luongo

The way things look now, Avs could have had two of MacKinnon, Drouin and Seth Jones had they not matched Cgy's offer sheet to O'Reilly.
