What do you guys think about Landislav Smid? I dont really know too much about him but I found him on Cap Geek while looking for defense under 30 ( #FlyersStruggles). He is a free agent this year. Do you think he will resign, hit the market, or be dealt? How much do you think he will go for? 3.5 Mil? |

resigned for sure.
Top 4 shut down D man. Physical, tied 2nd in shot blocking, 15th in hits.
No way EDM lets him go |

I think he has been playing himself into a contract. Problem is, so has Whitney. Someone has to go. With a win tonight, even with a loss in our next game, there is an outside chance of a playoff spot. I would think you sign him now and deal him in the off season if you need to. If we can get him for 3.5, which I think is fair, I would do 3 years. Whitney should get a 1 year contract of 2.5.
Despite the shutout. I still think if we can't get a 1-2 dman we need a better goalie or a long term 1A goalie. I am still throwing Mike Smith's name out there as a rental. Phoenix is losing most of their team including both dmen. We have tons of extra players. There should be a solutions somewhere. |

Nah, Mike Smith is the perfect example of profiting from certain systems. He would end up like bryz |

Yeah and that would be the gamble with him. The problem is the only other goalies that are viable are
Nabokov who at 38 is not better than Habby at 40
Bishop who has played well in a short stretch with a strong d in front
Backstrom who is great but at 37 he would be a band aid to our problem
Kipper who has lost his ability
Hiller who may be a 1B goalie since he has had shaky d due to injuries
Elliot who played terrible this year but posted 9 SO last year
And then the big fish
Lou, who I would really like. The guy never quits. I divisional trade is rare but what Van wants for him is something we can part with. Cheap secondary scoring and a lot of it. We would have to give up more but to get a top 10, you have to.
Dubnyk can play decent but even tonight he was average. He played a positionally sound game and Vancouver played into it. He was never really challenged and many times he left huge open sides but you either caught that or would have to go back. He is an Osgood goalie. He can play well most nights if the other team plays good but if the other team plays playoff style hockey, he has no chance.
The only way to win with him is strong defensive bottom 6 (no Brown, Smyth, Jones or Eager) and to improve our D with two solid two way veterans.
If not we are hoping Habby can take us to the promised land. |

You could not have asked for anything more from Dubnyk tonight. He made some huge saves on deflections to keep the Canucks out of the game. This is still a fragile team and if the Canucks had gotten a goal late in the first and some momentum this could have been a completely different outcome.
Dubnyk still may not be the answer but tonight he played well enough to give me a little more hope. |

I know and he does that and I kept thinking at the start of the year I would stop harping on him. However I couldn't figure out how he let in so many soft goals when he is a good goalie. The thing is, he plays a great positional role. He doesn't often commit early, he butterflies well, he is big and he has speed. The problem is, if you watch, he is often not in position in the net. He leaves the far side open more times than not, he commits late which leaves him lacking from outside shots and his use of blocker/stick/glove is average leaving rebounds.
If he can absorb the shot or dive on the puck, we are find but I think he might be a Roloson type goalie and bloom REALLY late. He shows promise. However if you watch tonight, his "amazing saves" were played right into him. He did good. He played like a top 25 goalie but he is not presently a top 10 goalie in the NHL and with our defense, we need one if we are going to make the playoffs and have a chance.
I agree the canucks could have changed the momentum but they didn't show up tonight. I think you can thank Hall for that. Tough when you are down by 3 that early. |

Smid does seem like a good addition. And that does look like a reasonable price for each. Also Mike Smith would end up like Bryz...Thats a warning. Also its speculated that he wants a big contract.
How far do you think your team is away from a cup run? |

Probably 3 years. Hopefully we'll sneak into the playoffs as an 8th seed this year, and improve even more next year and maybe make it to the 2nd round or something. After that, I could see the Oilers challenging for the division lead and being a legit contender. |

Is it just me or is there an awefullot of brand new Leaf fan trolls coming around with sign on dates in the last couple of days....
Can we get someone to please take them out behind the woodshed and put them down?
Come on Clouts. Enough is enough. - Iggysbff
Every team has their fair share of morons. The Oilers and Leafs are no different.
People have to remember that leaf fans have been hearing it from all teams for years now. It only stands to reason that we would come in here and give a little bit back now that the team has had minimal success.

I have to agree with signing Smid and keeping Whitney if the contract is right.
The guy I think the Oil need to move is Nick Schultz.
He has done nothing wrong and has done what has been asked of him.
It just seems like Edmonton isnt the fit for him. Cant really explain what it is but I would sign the other 2 and move N. Shultz. |

Here's how we've been doing in the playoff race the past week. This was our ideal scenario going forward.
Green= good guys win, red=bad guys win, blue= loser point
Minnesota to beat Phoenix
Anaheim to beat SJ
28th
Phoenix to beat Nasvhille (unless Phoenix beats Minny, then it's flipped)
Detroit to beat SJ
EDMONTON VS COLUMBUS
29th
Minnesota to beat Dallas
Calgary to beat Columbus
30th
Colorado to beat Nasvhille
Phoenix to beat SJ (unless Phoenix beats Minny and Nasvhille)
EDMONTON VS VANCOUVER
31st
Anaheim to beat Columbus
Los Angeles to beat Dallas
1st
Chicago to beat Nasvhille
Anaheim to beat Dallas
Vancouver to beat SJ
EDMONTON VS CALGARY
2nd
Colorado to beat Nasvhille
Los Angeles to beat Phoenix
NOTES:
As you can see if Dallas loses to both LA and Anaheim, a win against Calgary can put us into 8th!
It will kind of be an "artificial" 8th because the Blues will have games in hand until the 11th. |
