Wait for what?....This is a young team who's sitin 6th in the East that needs to fill a couple of positions to make them a very competitive team as early as next season..
- Fruitcakenipple

How many teams do a rebuild and the first year in the playoffs win the Cup? It takes time you dont blow your load at the first whiff of success you make smart long term moves when you can to improve.

There is no need to make a stupid decision now so MLSE can pad the bottom line wih an extra round (assuming Lu can even do that anymore).

So he wasn`t under contract when the Leafs traded him? Leafs screwed up again, we should have traded Shultz to Edmonton for a 1st before he signed with them
- cdjaakkola

he was drafted by us so we owned him for 2 years....we had 2 years to sign him to an ELC or he goes back to the draft.....he didnt want to play second fiddle to Pogge, so we had to trade him or lose him for nothing

Well they certainly not gonna just sit around...If the opportunity comes where they can fill a need u can bet they will do that rather than just draft and develop that position..

See there's the problem....I'm pretty sure MLSE/Nonis not interested in waiting 3-4 years to compete for a cup..

Imo the Leafs need a center and a #1 goaltender there no way Nonis drafting and waiting to develop these positions..He will try to fill them via trade or FA..

There is a goaltender available and u can bet Nonis trying to land him..

Reimer and Kadri by all signs have shown they can be just what we are looking for... Gees we are actually playing well for once and some people wanna blow it up...

They all have some kind of leverage, it's called the refusal to sign their name on a contract.
- itsalwaysfunny

Right. Eric Lindros had more leverage than Rask would have (if this story is true) because the Nordiques absolutely had to make use of a player many thought would be the "Next One".

So what if Tuuka Rask doesn't sign? A promising prospect will have seriously hurt his stock by refusing to follow the same process that every other goddamn prospect has to go through... Waiting their turn to come to the NHL.

He would go back into the draft after a couple, and what then? Probably wouldn't be picked as highly, since he was no sure-fire superstar a la Lindros.

2.47 GAA and .904 SV% is elite these days??? Hmmmm. A goalie beaten out of his crease by a young gun. A guy on the decline with a top 5 worst contract in the NHL. A guy with a reputation for the big meltdown and the soft goal.
- Blazed

He's haing an off year probably to do with all the controversy surroudning the situation. He helped take his team to the finals he did not lose the series he played well. They wouldn't have got that far without him kesler and the sedins disappeared for long stretches in the playoffs and he had to help carry them. He won olympic gold as well as world championships, took his junior team to consecutive memorial cup tournaments. As for schneider beaten him out he didn't really do anything to beat him out Vancouver management bent to the fans and that's why he lost his job.

personally i think pretty much any goalie would look good playing on the bruins

be interesting down the road when the bruins go through their own rebuild (its inevitable, all teams eventually have to) to see how rask plays when he isnt on a cup contender

Sure they will and if your need is a goalie playing worse than what you currently have, a distraction, and a cap anchor contract then you will get Luongo

No one wants to blow it up but u can improve on what u have ..At some point the Leafs cant simply rely on the draft so trading for a need will have to happen..

see shultz, justin

if they dont sign an ELC there isnt much a club can do.. and if they are a talented player then teams will always be there to gobble them up

Dozzer is this possible.

I know that a team can take back up to 50% of a players contract in a trade, but can both teams take back salary in a trade.

For Example:

The leafs trade a package based around Grabovski to Vancouver and eat 50% of his salary for the entire 4 years remaining after this one. Toronto Gets Luongo and Vancouver eats 25% of his contract for the entirety of the deal.

For the first 4 years the Leafs pay 2.75 million of Grabovski's contract and just under 4 for Luongo. Essentially making Luongo a 6.75 cap hit for the first 4 years. However in the later deals once the Grabovski contract is up Luongo's cap hit would remain just under 4 million.

Can anyone shed some light.
